Point History Society Update

Cahier / Volume # 2

The Saint-Pierre River

The Saint Pierre River ran through the west end of Montreal from about Lachine to Old Montreal during much of our history. Including a section now gone, that ran along Mullins St. - here in the Point.

The Point History Society has just published a new booklet about the history of this very interesting river. It is available in either English or French and is 40 pages with some maps and photos included. We are selling copies for $ 10.00 to support the Society.

If you would like to order a copy, just send an e-mail note to fergus@psccommunity.com and include your mailing address, and I will make arrangements to send one to you, along with payment instructions.

Thanks

Fergus Keyes

The tunnel.. the best trip I remember was when My Dad let me ride on the back of a horse as he drove the milk wagon through the tunnel on the way to the dairy... Fr.Carney never liked the tunnel and a lot of times he would take a gang of us kids over the rail bridge..

Where Are You From Griffintown-Westmount

Comments:
Yes the Wellington Tunnel was opened in1933, the same year I was born. It leaked from day one right up until the day it closed. It is completely sealed up with an earthen barrier on the Point Entrance and an iron-grill barrier on the Griffintown side. Looking through the grill you can see the water line if you have a flashlight. Close to the bridge above the Wellington Tunnel on the Point side of the Lachine Canal is a light brown building. This place was where the fumes from the tunnel were exhausted to the atmosphere.

Denis.

Thanks Roger.
The next time I am in the point I will try to find the inscription. I went through that tunnel a million times and never notice it .
Good information.
