Welcome to the

Alan Rickman Download Haven

Guest Book

The purpose of the Alan Rickman Download Haven Guest Book is for group discussion of Alan Rickman’s projects (old and new), news, information, and pictures.  Also welcome are questions, sightings, and reviews.

Our community is made up of many long-time members, and is continually joined by new AR fans.   As a new poster, you may want to browse our archives or lurk for a short while so you get a feel for our community.  We don’t have a lot of rules, but we do expect everyone to respect each other and to respect Alan Rickman.

When posting information or pictures you've found from other sources, please try to include credit for the hard working source that provided it.   Sometimes it may be impossible to remember where you found something and that is OK too because 9 times out of 10 another member will remember and post the information a little later.

AR fandom sometimes suffers from what our group has fondly come to call “AR Drought”.  Its these times, we find solace by digging deep into our AR archives and posting an old piccie  (or two) and/or an old interview.  These always seem to generate good fun discussion and often brings back some wonderful memories for some of our members.

When you want to post thoughts about one of AR’s films, you might want to consider using a flag such as *SPOILER* before you write your thoughts just in case someone hasn’t seen the film and doesn’t want to know about it ahead of time.   The Harry Potter phenomenon is so huge, it has its very own place.  Please find the link to our HP Spoilers Forum below.  You’ll find lots of good discussion about plots and theories in the realm of Harry Potter.

In addition, what’s a good friendship without some place to get as silly and squeely as humanly possible ?    Goodness knows AR gives us a lot to Squeeee about!  Our Alan Rickman Download Haven Discussion Party fits the bill for that particular part of our personality.  It’s a rip roaring party and there’s a lot of laughs and good times to be had by all.  We talk about anything and everything over there and would love to see your participation.
Finally, our Alan Rickman Download Haven Live Chat Room is a place to shoot the breeze with other AR fans in realtime.  Pop in any time and you never know who you will run into or what the topic of discussion might be.  It’s a great way for our members to get to know each other a little better, and to continue conversations not specific to the main ‘on topic’ board in as much detail as they’d like.  Lots of  AR-admiration goes on and laughs are had in the chat room!

There is a fantastic group of Alan Rickman fans from all over the world represented here and each person adds to the fun in their very own way.

Lurking is welcome but we would love for you to post your comments when you feel comfortable.

The most important thing to keep in mind is......HAVE FUN!

If you have any problems posting,
please don't hesitate to email one of us

Ali-Pat: I've never heard those Valentine's Day poems, do you mind uploading them or sending them to me? I think the lady forgot about me after I asked about Sonnet 12 but I didn't want to bother her again, maybe someone else would like to give her a gentle nudge? And the director of The Boy in the Bubble said that it'd be showing at film festivals for the next year or two before a DVD release.

If you could go back in time and catch any performance, what would it be?Les Liaisons Dangereuses with Alan Rickman and Lindsay Duncan

And what of his former Potter pals?

Radcliffe says that, of all the potential mentors from the shoot, he's remained closest with Alan Rickman, who played Severus Snape in the series of films.

"Alan Rickman came and saw the show twice and took me out for dinner," he says before catching himself boasting and turning to humorous self-deprecation. "He [relayed] some pieces of advice but you know some things sound amazing in Alan Rickman's voice and if I said them to you they wouldn't have nearly the impact, but when he said them to me it seemed quite profound."

Alan Rickman, Lily Rabe, Hamish Linklater and Theresa Rebeck will be on a show called Theater Talk on CUNY TV on Saturday 18 February. There are additional air times, and the episode will probably be on their website (and Youtube) at some point:

Oh, I forgot!  Gatsby--those Valentines Day poems (there were two!) were certainly excellent quality!  I was able to download them onto my PC for a small fee.  He read "Delight in Disorder" and "Upon Julia's Clothes".  Haven't found them available anywhere to download right now but I haven't had time to do a thorough search--anybody have a link?

I contacted the creator of "Sonnet no. 12" late last year to ask whether she would put it online anytime soon. She said she'd check with the producers but never got back to me after that. There's a bit more information about it on her website: http://helenanimate.blogspot.com/2009/07/sonnet-no-12.html
And funnily enough, she tweeted this the other day:

Hey Ali Pat;

The only thing I can think of what sonnet 12 might be and it is a guess is....

You might recall for Valentines Day poss 2009 a  Broadsheet Newspaper may be The Times ?.. (cant remember )
did a series of poems read by Artists that were available for a couple of ££ to send to a beloved via mobile phone!..
Dan Radcliff did "My Mistress eyes"; Alan did one to... it could be this..?
My mobile at the time was so primitive I did not think the sound quality would be worth it.
I had always hoped that it would magically appear on you tube... Alas not yet...
Sorry.
It is intriguing.... well spotted...

Thanks for the interview with Hettienne, Kathryn. I especially like this part:

It’s probably similar to how NBA or NFL players greet each other in a locker room before a big game… weird handshakes, ass smacks, chest bumps, moon walking, wood knocking, etc.

Now I can't help but imagine AR doing one or more of these things.

Surely AR is cautious about home-made food from strangers anyway but would've been especially so during the run of the Rachel Corrie play so I'm guessing Maryland's note was a bit more personal therefore he knew there was nothing wrong with them.

Thanks everyone for your comments on my food gifting question. I appreciate your responses. I certainly don't want to make too much of a deal about it.  Maryland, thank you for graciously providing more details about your experience. On further reflection, I think if AR wasn't going to eat the cakes, he would most likely tell you, rather than allowing you to continue to provide something that would be trashed.  Obviously, he perceives you as a trustworthy fan with a good heart.

Now, I think I might whip up some "Lovely Cakes" myself this weekend. The recipe does look very enticing!

I can only speak for my own experiences regarding Mr.Rickman and food gifts.
The very first time I sent something backstage to him, I spoke to him after wards and he said, "I opened up these lovely cakes, and I wondered, 'Are they poisoned?', but then I saw your card and I knew they were not!"  ( Followed by a HUGE smile!) That was in 2006 during the production of "My Name Is Rachel Corrie".   Once I got home, I mailed the photo of he and I together along with another batch of "Lovely Cakes" and when I followed up with a phone call, was told that the cast and crew had been enjoying the ones I sent.
Since then, every time I attend a play in NYC, I send some backstage with cards and always use the same packaging and even the same, identical gift bag.  I've received back kind notes from Mr.Rickman.
Last weekend, after the play, all of the cast were telling me how they enjoyed the "Lovely Cakes", especially Jerry McConnell, who told me he couldn't stop himself from going back for "just one more"!  Mr.Rickman  thanked me "very much again".
I guess it depends on the situation or maybe I'm just lucky in this instance!

That's exactly what I've always thought too Desmeralda. If I were an actor, I wouldn't immediately eat food from some anonymous stranger, even if a fan, dropping homemade food off at the stage door. I mean, that could be very dangerous.

Desmeralda

Comments:
I have a question/comment about the gift of food to Mr. Rickman. Do you think he actually eats fan gifted food products, home-made or otherwise? Generally, fans are unknown people, even if the actor has met them a few times before.  My thinking is that because food products are so easily tampered with or even unintentionally tainted (spoilage, germs, what have you!), celebrities would just eschew the eating of any food products of unknown origin. Certainly, a stage actor couldn't afford missed performances due to a foodborne illness.

What does everyone else think about this?

It's Birthday Fund time again!

I have updated the link at the top and to the left of the GB entries to connect to  the current Just Giving fundraising site.  On some computers you actually see a lovely, smouldering image of Alan but on other computers you only see the words "Fundraising Page Image".  Haven't sorted that problem out yet.
Or you can just click HERE.

This is a need-based fund for aspiring actors and actresses who are attending RADA, Alan's alma mater.  Every year we see the names of students who have been helped by this fund and who are, we hope, on their way to becoming the next generation of great theatre professionals.

Does Alan know about this fund?  Why yes, he certainly does--when I asked him about it at the ASRADA event in November 2011 he was visibly pleased (huge smile!!!!) about the fund and told me that "every little bit helps". So there you have it--a stamp of approval from The Man Himself.

So please consider donating--the amount doesn't matter and you can keep the amount you donate private if you choose.  You might even get an email from Alan thanking you for your generosity.

The "Lovely Cakes" tradition goes back to 2006 at the Minetta Lane Theatre for "My Name Is Rachel Corrie".  I found a wonderful recipe on a package of English Toffee chips.  The recipe is on the Hershey's recipe site under "Toffee Cookie Bars".
I had heard of Mr.Rickman's sweet tooth and took a chance that he'd like them.
I was lucky to meet AR after that play and a couple of times more. Since then, each time I go to a play in NYC I send a batch backstage.  He may not remember me but he definitely remembers the cakes!

A friend and I saw "Seminar" last Friday night.  It was great and we had third row seats!   Two hours before the show we went to the stage door to send a gift backstage and there was Hamish Linklatter having a cigarette!   When he headed inside I spoke to him and asked if he would carry my gift bag, full of "Lovely Cakes" for the cast!
I couldn't believe my luck!
After the play all the cast members came out to sign autographs, it was very cold!
As each one came by me I asked if they had eaten any "Lovely Cakes"!  What a great reaction!  Jerry O'Connell said he loved them and couldn't stop eating them!  Hamish Linklatter and Lily Rabe said the same!  Etienne Park didn't get any and was jealous!
Best of all, when Alan made his way to me, I asked him and he reacted with a big smile and a "Yes!  Thank-you so much again!"   People started asking for photos and maybe it was the overdose of sugar from the "Lovely Cakes" but he started posing with people!   I'm pleased to say I got one, but unfortunately the camera died before my friend could get one!
It was a great time! I plan to send more "Lovely Cakes" with a photo and get more autographs.  After all, Valentine's Day is coming!

The amazing British play Jerusalem made the journey from Britain to America with very few changes apparently despite being very "local" to my ears. I think they changed Girls Aloud to Pussycat Dolls but little else. I think a truly great play will travel well in either direction but don't know if Seminar sounds like truly great play.

That whole business of re-writing plays for another audience still sounds odd to my ears. I suppose it's okay if Theresa Rebeck re-writes it herself, but then it would have probably been better if she had written a less American version in the first place so that it would be more marketable. After all, which playwright doesn't want their play to be a success in many countries?

Ali-Pat

Comments:
I am curious to know what kind of revisions will be made to Seminar, also.  I have to admit, I needed to look up some of the NYC references after the play (not to mention the writers colonies) but my ignorance did not keep me from appreciating the dialog, action and tone of the play.

But what about Private Lives?   The dated language and references in that Very British play seemed foreign to most American ears yet it transferred from the West End to Broadway with only minor changes ("Tiller Girls" stands out as an example).  Not a perfect example perhaps, but I hope you get my point.

All that aside, my most burning question about Seminar remains this one:  when will it be in print

Kathryn

Exactly, it would be interesting, Devin, if they kept it the same. Why not leave it as it is and see what happens? But I do understand the logic of making it more accessible to Londoners/Europeans, but Ms. Rebeck wrote it and we'll see if she changes it. I would be interested to see how it went over in London as is.

Of course, I have to see it in New York first...5 more weeks!

Re: God of Carnage- They changed the names of the characters (Michel became Michael, Véronique became Veronica etc) and the setting from Paris to London for the West End transfer, and the setting to Brooklyn for the Broadway transfer from there as well amongst some minor changes.

And Kathryn- yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if the 4 supporting actors were recast (either because of scheduling or to cast actors who are more well known in the London theatre scene)

With Seminar, I feel it like if they wanted to make sure it'd be a hit with critics as well as audiences they'd want to change the setting from New York to London which would require pretty significant rewrites since there's a lot of New York lifestyle references and the dialogue is very New York as well.

Or not. Maybe they won't touch it at all. That'd be interesting.

Devin, I also wonder if Mr. Rickman would be the only one staying on if they took it to the West End. Would they recast the other 4?

God of Carnage? What did they do to that play? Was it too French?

I don't know but if a play is too American respectively too European, if such a thing actually exists, I don't see how "translating" it will work. I would assume that the play will be destroyed by doing so.

I've wondered if Rebeck would make changes to the script to make it more English, similar to what they did with God of Carnage, but I don't know. The play is just very, very New York and it's like Rebeck would have to write a whole new play if they wanted to make it more accessible to a London audience. I'm interested to see how the West End will respond to it...

In unrelated news, for those of us in the US (or elsewhere, I'm not sure if you can watch NBC online) Daniel Radcliffe is hosting Saturday Night Live tomorrow night. Think Alan might make a guest appearance? Eh, personally I think it's unlikely, but it's fun to think about.
