Hi everyone, FINALLY checking in.  I've been all out of sorts the past few months.

Among other things, I've had international phone calls to Switzerland on my phone bill.  One call alone was over 400.00.
As it turns out, my modem has been hi-jacked!

I have spyware protection, virus protection, evey kind of protection you can think of.  Yet I still got hacked.

You can have internatonal call block put on your phone lines.  It doesn't cost aything, so be safe rather than sorry.  Maybe you wont have to go through what I've been through the last few months.

BE Safe, Not sorry.  Tell everyone you know about the international call blocking thing.
Love ya, Miss ya, ELF

Hello everyone! How is everyone doing? Things are going good here, just packing and trying to get ready to move into our new house in a few weeks.  I am so excited except for the packing part of it.  I am going to have a huge bon fire and get rid of everything and start over! LOL!!

So, how is everyone loving the new DC? It is so great to see Phil back behind the wheel of the Cornelia Marie.  He has so been missed.  I hate that Murray left. I guess all the pressure of King Crab Season was more than he wanted to deal with and I can't say I blame him.  But, is it going to be weird not seeing him anymore.  If something happens, who is going to operate the Cornelia Marie? Ding and Dong? God help the Bering Sea if that happens! LOL!! Hey, does anyone know anything about Norm Hanson and his wife? There are rumors going around that his wife left him and then there are others saying that it isn't true. Does anyone know the truth on that? Just curious.

Well, I have to get busy on homework if I want to take a break and watch the DC tonight.  I hope everyone is great and enjoy their summer so far. I have missed all my sistahs!  Big Hugs to all!  Take care and have a great week!

Michael Marino - welcome and great point about the GPS systems in the survival suits! You might want to pass that around the boards. They have to have satellites in the area, coast guard would need to use them for direction as would the fishing fleet.

Mary Kathleen - so sorry about your horse, hope your doing OK.

I was wondering why there are no G.P.S locator's on survival suits. This would save time locating crew members in the water by the coasties. There are small water proof units that could be activated manually or auto when in the water. This would help save lives. marinomike987@verizon.net P.S. I was home sick for a week and am hooked on this show. May you all be save! Good hunting.

HEY MY SWEET SISTAHS!!  IT IS SO GOOD TO SEE SO MANY OF YOU AGAIN!!!  How is everyone? Things are going good here!  I am getting ready to have Dylan's 14th birthday party in two weeks.  I can't believe he is going to be 14.  Why is it as kids get older they feel they have the right to keep dragging you with them? It is so not fair! LOL!!

Is everyone enjoying the new season of the DC.  I felt so bad for Phil.  He was looking so good, but ended up looking so devastated when he found out he couldn't get out on the waters.  My heart just broke for him.  This is definitely going to be one of the best, but saddest seasons yet.

Well, everyone, I just wanted to check in and say HELLO.  There is another website that was just started by Travis Arket of the North American.  I helped set it up and it is an amazing site.  Go check it out. Hello all,

Marybeth I talked to Bubbles/Bonnie a few weeks ago and she was doing better. She was able to get around and cook dinner and stuff. She could not do any heavy lifting and was taking it easy, but I have e-mailed here recently and not heard back so I was kind of getting concerned as well.

I'll keep you posted if I hear anything.

Wow, looks like the weather is going to be really picking up on the new season. It is so hard to watch the "mayday" part. I hope there is better news on this situation next week. I guess it puts it all into perspective of why this is the deadliest job...so sad. I was so happy to see Capt. Phil call in to Murray. You know I hope they at least film him a bit through the time he is out (I still am not convinced he will be out the whole season), I am not going to believe that for one second! Sorry to say this but it just is not the same without him!

I know we have so many banditas (and I live the time bandit crew as well) but Phil's humor just gets me!

Hope everyone is doing well. Please post some hellos...this board is getting to quite!

Love to the sistahs!

Hello Everyone! This article was posted on the Harvard Business Publishing Site. Pretty amazing!

Current Feed Content

  • On Crabs and Leaders

    Posted: 2009-04-14 19:08:54 UTC

The best TV show ever created about leadership and management starts a new season Tuesday night.

It's Discovery Channel's Deadliest Catch. If you don't know DC, it follows several crab-fishing boats through the Bering Sea as their crews risk life and limb (literally) and work like mules (figuratively) so that you can have bisque.

DC is an engrossing portrait of life at sea. It's beautiful, and sometimes harrowing, to look at. But what in the name of Opilio crab legs does this collection of foul-mouthed, hardscrabble Alaskan maniacs have to do with leadership and management?

In a word, everything.  In fact, the show has sustained itself (it's entering its fifth season) because it's about leadership and management, and not in spite of it.

Deadliest Catch uses leadership as its narrative arc. No, the creators probably didn't sit around a table and say, You know this show is really about the stuff Harvard Business Review writes about. Let's go with that. Rather, they recognized that these men's lives depend on good management and great leadership. It makes sense to focus on the inherent drama of those specific moments of leadership. Those times when their decisions have immediate, and palpable repercussions.

Without that chance to see leadership in action, we'd probably get bored with the big waves and clanging steel pots and swearing, no matter how spectacular they look in high-def.

So how is the show about leadership? Watch for even 15 minutes and it becomes patently obvious. Here's an incomplete list.

Strategy and execution. Every crab season starts with the captains deciding where to put their pots, and then adjusting that strategy as they get real-time data on their results, in the form of full or empty pots. By focusing efficient execution, keeping the fishing fast and safe, the crew can lay more pots and catch more crabs.

Employee onboarding (literally). The captain must integrate rookie fishermen ("greenhorns") with the veterans, without much time for orientation or feedback. Usually, a deck boss handles this,  but you will hear captains assessing their greenhorns and deftly putting them in positions to succeed, or in positions to see how they handle pressure situations.

Competitive cooperation. Like many businesses, crab fishing is full of "frenemies." The captains work with and against captains of other crab boats to ensure their own success and also the success of the industry. Captains talk about where they've found good fishing grounds, and help each other in trouble. But the sharing only extends so far. In one episode a young captain gets too aggressive looking for help finding crabs and the other captains hasten to chastise him.

Innovation. Ever try to fix a punctured hydraulic pump 30 feet above the deck of a boat, sitting on a slick, oil-soaked crane, rollicking in rough seas, during a snow squall?

Morale. Obviously keeping the team's attitude up is one of the most important leadership functions in this environment. In many ways it's the core of the show. How do you keep men fishing for 20 or more hours straight in freezing weather, with 20-foot seas crashing over them, when the pots are coming up empty?

In one memorable episode, with his team exhausted and ready to rebel against him, Sig Hansen, the captain of the Northwestern, literally talks us through his approach to the above scenario as it's playing out on his deck. (He had gotten frustrated enough with their attitude that he set up a suggestion box; "It should be called a complaint box" said one crew member, and for a brief moment, office workers everywhere could relate to the deckhands.)

Hansen tells us in plain, sometimes profane English, why he's pushing the crew and how he knows it's okay to do so at this moment, and when he'll back off. He was basically explaining emotionally intelligent leadership.

Sure enough, in a few hours, the crew's lauding their captain for his decisions and his ability to push them to succeed. They're saying this is why they love working for him--why they risk their lives for him.

And that's what makes this such compelling leadership and management content. When someone could die if you make the wrong decision, you'd better not make many wrong decisions. These guys are better managers than you and me. They're better leaders than most.

Oh, and if they don't catch crab, they don't get paid, and neither does their crew. Hansen noted in an online Q+A that one season his crew came home after hard weeks of fishing with negative 300 dollars. No one complained.

But somewhere near Wall Street, someone was probably complaining about the price of his bisque.

Hey my sweet sistahs! How is everyone?  Can you believe that it is finally time for a new season of the DC?!?  It is so hard it has been a year now. The withdrawals have been almost unbearable, but finally, we are all going to be able to get our Phil and John Fix!

Not much has been going on here.  I am not in school this semester and I am chomping at the bit to get back.  It has been so bad, I have started cooking and ironing! lol!! I took the semester off to help take care of my Dad, but he ended up passing away a week after school started.  Had I known it was going to happen that quick, I would have gone ahead with school.  He was upset with me for taking the semester off anyway.  But, I have had to really take care of my Mom and of course, Dylan (yes, he is still having seizures.  He had one 6 hours ago.) so, it is a good thing that I took time off.  I am just ready to get through with it.  I have a year left and I hope there aren't anymore obstacles.  Other than that, that is my life right now in a nutshell.

Well, to all my veteran sistahs, I love each of you dearly and have missed you.  For all my newbie sistahs, welcome to the site.  There are a bunch of wonderful people here.  I hope everyone has a Happy Easter.  Take care!  Love and hugs to all!! MUAH!!!!

As for Bonnie--my heart goes out to you!Someone once told me that a woman could not get a hernia. The important thing is to rest. You will be as good as new in no time.

I will keep you in my prayers.

hello all!i have been away so long but it was not by choice, some of you who are on my space know what happened, ill fill you guys in only because im still terrified. back on jan. 30 i woke up with a what i thought was a stomach virus, im around kids at the preschool and thought i picked something up, sat. i was fine, sunday 2/1 i got up and put out signs for an open house and as i was doing that i felt a stabbing pain that kept getting worse until finally i realized after i got back home that i was going to pass out and managed to tell bobby to call an ambulance, i knew this wasnt good. i woke up the next day in the hospital, id had a hernia but pinched in that hernia was approx. 2.5 feet of intestines that had died off and come to find out i had gangrene. the doctor ended up removing 4 feet of my small intestines and i seemed to be ok , around 4pm the next day i suffered what they call ARDS, acute respiratory distress, my heart and lungs stopped, my blood could not oxygenate and i had total sepsis so for a couple of seconds i was visiting the other side.  I could hear the nurses and dr.s telling me "youre going to be ok bonnie we're going to give you a breathing tube" and they put me out, i woke up a few days later in ICU i was on life support my mother was crying hysterically, my husband was a mess, my sisters were there,  i could only move my hands i could not open my eyes or speak, all i wanted was to know where my daughter was and they wouldnt let her in because the life support tubes etc are frightening to a child but i didnt know i even had it!. Like our beloved captain phil i had to receive heparin shots a couple times a day in my stomach those s.o.b's hurt! because they were scared of clots etc and id developed pneumonia so i had I.V in my neck because they ran out of space on my arms and my arms had become so swollen and my mom wouldnt let them put them in my feet. ! i finally got home on february 16th.  this past week i started getting pain in the center of my stomach, lo and behold i now have what they call an incisional hernia and i am going in for surgery tomorrow afternoon cross your fingers and say a prayer sistahs im so scared right now!

Hope all is going great with everyone. Dana, I did hear about your Dad and Sweetie I am so sorry! I still have you and Dylan in my prayers!

Kate, Helen, Denise, Gayle, all the Bonnies, Carrie, Colena, and to everyone else that I can not think of right now...miss you all and hope to talk with you soon.

Any news from the capt or crews yet? I know it is top secret, but someone spill a few beans! haha! I hope they are doing good. I do not even know if any of the crews are bad from Opie season this year...update needed! Come on, Claudia, give us the goods!

Could you please tell me who sings "Dreamboat" on this web page?  I have looked everywhere for that song.  All I have been able to find is Dreamboat Annie"  and that isn't even close to the song that is played with Phils pictures.  I would really appreciate this.  Thanks

Group Birthday Card Exchange

  DC Sistah Cheat Sheet

Unfortunately, Cheryl can no longer manage
our Birthday Card Exchange Program.  Lizzie has
cheerfully volunteered to take over for us.

If you have been participating in our birthday card
exchange group, please email Lizzie with your birthday
and your address so she can begin a new list.

I'd like to encourage those of you that have not
participated before to consider it.  We have
a lot of fun with this activity.  I've had a lot
of comments from some of the girls
that are participating about how fun it is
to come home to a mailbox full of cards.

If you would like to participate in our group birthday
card exchange, please email our social director
Lizzie with your birthday and address.   Thank you again, Lizzie!

There is no obligation to participate but it is has been a
great deal of fun.

Denise (saToyMama) has ever so kindly offered to manage a "DC Sistahs" cheat sheet with any information about yourself that you would like to share. Example information: Name, Screen Name, MySpace link, Other website address, Email address, Occupation, Favorite Captain, How long you've had your addiction...etc.  Pick and choose or add only the information you feel 100%+ comfortable sharing.  The only piece of information that is required is a phone number so Denise or I can call you to confirm who you are.  We will have to speak with you before your information can be distributed or you receive a list--Getting your voice mail is not a confirmation.  If you don't want your phone number to be shared with the other Sistahs, please make a note of that in your email and Denise will ensure that its not included on the shared list.   The list will be shared with only the Sistahs that are sharing their information and have been confirmed.

If you would like to participate in our cheat sheet program, please visit McDreamy/McSteamy.  Then sit back and wait for a phone call from either Denise or myself!

You do not have to be confirmed OR registered to participate on our
message board below.  Just click "Sign Guestbook" and post away!
