August 12, 2009 Presidential Medal of Freedom and Two Sacred Heart Alumnae Eunice Kennedy Shriver (1921-2009) and Mary Robinson SAINT LOUIS - As a 1984 winner is memorialized, a 2009 recipient is at the White House to accept America’s highest civilian honor, the Medal of Freedom. Both are alumnae of the Sacred Heart and represent the leadership, service, and hope that Sacred Heart education seeks to engender in its students. Eunice Kennedy Shriver attended Sacred Heart academies at Maplehurst in the Bronx, New York, Noroton, Connecticut (1937-1938), and, while her father was ambassador to the Court of St. James, Roehampton, England. She attended Manhattanville College. Her mother, Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, her daughter, Maria, and many other family members, are also “ours.” Mrs. Shriver’s commitment to those with intellectual and physical disabilities led her to found the Special Olympics. Her family’s statement summarizes her beautiful life: "Inspired by her love of God, her devotion to her family, and her relentless belief in the dignity and worth of every human life, she worked without ceasing - searching, pushing, demanding, hoping for change. She was a living prayer, a living advocate, a living center of power. She set out to change the world and to change us, and she did that and more…" With the theme of “Women of Conscience,” the 1991 AASH National Conference in New York City honored Mrs. Shriver’s work. Mary Robinson, an alumna of Mount Anville Convent of the Sacred Heart in Dublin, was the first female President of Ireland (1990 – 1997) and a United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (1997 – 2002.) Honoring her as “an agent of change,” the White House statement adds: … she continues to bring attention to international issues as Honorary President of Oxfam International and chairs the Board of Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations (GAVI Alliance). Since 2002 she has been President of Realizing Rights: The Ethical Globalization Initiative, based in New York, an organization she founded to make human rights the compass that charts a course for globalization that is fair, just and benefits all. The foundress of the Society of the Sacred Heart and its schools worldwide, Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat, in the words of a recent biographer, “hoped that the education would be profound enough to inspire pupils to rebuild, renew, and transform society, wherever they lived.” Hopefully Sacred Heart education can claim a part in the rebuilding, renewal, and transformation Eunice Kennedy Shriver and Mary Robinson represent. While offering our loving sympathy to Maria Shriver and the entire Kennedy family and our congratulations to Mary Robinson, the AASH sends this message to all our Sacred Heart educators and coworkers as a new school year begins. May these stellar examples energize us as we seek to illuminate the path of faith, service, and courageous leadership for all our students and alumnae and alumni. Comments: Please join RED ENVELOPE CAMPAIGN:
What: Get red envelopes and mail them on March 31st to the White House. When: Mail on March 31, 2009 1) Get a red envelope. Pick up a card at dollar tree for .50 and just use the envelope or make your own. On the front, address it to: President Barack Obama The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW Washington , D.C. 20500 2) On the back, write the following message. This envelope represents one child who died because of an abortion. It is empty because the life that was taken is now unable to be a part of our world.
3) Mail your envelope on March 31, 2009. Forward this event to every one of your friends who you think would send one too. I wish we could send 50 million red envelopes, one for every child who died [in the U.S. ] before having a chance to live. Barack Obama spoke at a Planned Parenthood Action Fund event, uttering the now infamous line, "Well, the first thing I'd do as president is, is sign the Freedom of Choice Act. [Applause.] That's the first thing that I'd do." [The Freedom of Choice Act, which will essentially undo every law currently in place to limit abortion in the U.S. (i.e., parental consent laws, parental notification, waiting periods, prohibition of transporting a minor girl across state lines to obtain an abortion, etc.)]. An empty red envelope will send a message to President Barack Obama that there is moral outrage in this country over this issue. It will be quiet, but clear. It may seem that those who believe abortion is wrong are in a minority. It may seem like we have no voice and it's shameful to even bring it up. Let us show our President and the world that the voices of those of us who do not believe abortion is acceptable are not silent and must be heard. Together we can impact The President and save the lives of millions of children. Thank you.

Comments: Good Morning Everyone Below is a request from an SHP alum
Dear Sacred Heart Alumni, I am writing this on behalf of Cristina Echeveria- Moustirats and Christophe Moustirats, Class of SHP ‘90. Their toddler son, Sebastian is in ICU and urgently needs your help. Please take the time to schedule a screening with Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital. Your effort could save his life! Below is a letter from the family, followed by instructions and contact information. With sincerest gratitude, Erin Gillett, SHP ‘90 Dear Family & Friends, We want to send all of you a note to give you an update on Sebastian. About one week ago, Seb started coming down with common flu symptoms and had a rough couple of days trying to fight it (vomiting) but by Saturday he seemed to make a turn for the better and was starting to get his strength back. With several daily calls to his doctor, we felt that Seb should be fine until his doctor appointment on Monday morning. Well, by Sunday he just was not himself, unable to really eat/drink, hold up his head and then had a 45 minute seizure, where he was rushed to the hospital by ambulance at 11pm. Seb is now at Lucille Packard and will be there most likely for several weeks or longer. The doctors saw that he has bleeding throughout his brain and told us he would likely not make it. Incredibly and thankfully, they were wrong. He is stable at the moment and the good news is that the bleeding has not progressed. He is able to move his arms and legs, but at this point we do not know the extent of any permanent brain damage. The neurology team tells us to expect the worse but hope for the best as babies are extremely resilient. He is on daily platelet transfusions to keep his platelet levels up until we have a donor. This is where we would like to ask all of you to please help out in any way that you can, particularly local folks. We'd greatly appreciate it if you could send an email out to your family/friends/network and ask that anyone with A- or O- blood types become a platelet and blood donor for Seb. * THEY ARE NOW REQUESTING ALL BLOOD TYPES Seb is being put into Stanford's Directed Donor Program for blood platelets. He will receive platelet transfusions weekly from a pre-screened list of donors. Ideally, we are looking for up to 6-8 donors to donate their platelets every four weeks on recurring Monday's for up to one year. Direct blood related family members are not eligible donors. We need lots of people to be screened as there is a long list of things that can eliminate one from being an eligible donor. (I won't go into all of them here). He will need platelets weekly to keep him alive until his transplant. The reason for the limited donor list is to minimize the total number of HLA anti-bodies Seb is exposed to from different people. HLA anti-bodies complicate the stem cell transplant (aka bone marrow). Those interested and willing to become a directed donor to Sebastian can contact Carlene Vasques at the Stanford Bood Center, 650-723-6667. Carlene is on vacation the week of 10/13 - 10/18, but she will have a back up to schedule a pre-screening. There is no cost for the screening. All costs will be covered by insurance. Cristina and I would not be able to get through this difficult time without the support and love of family and friends. We are particularly blessed with such incredible grandparents who stay with Seb so often at the hospital to give us time with Landon and to rest. We ask that all of you please keep Seb in your thoughts and prayers.

Comments: Good Afternoon Everyone Below is a message sent to the AASH National Board from Kathleen Simon, our southern regional director. Please continue to keep those who have lost so much due to the devastation of the recent storms and hurricane IKE in your prayers. Remember, we ar Missionaries of the Heart and must continue to carry on the committment of St. Philippine to help those in need whenever possible.
UPDATE ON IKE I have just returned from a Board meeting at the Rosary where of course our concern was focused on our schools in the path of IKE - Grand Coteau and Duchesne in Houston. Our headmaster Dr. Tim Burns has been in text contact with his contemporaries as both schools and it appears that we have avoided catastrophic damages to both campuses. We have offered to assist in any way we can from students to housing; from monetary help to hands on help - we will let you know what the needs are for these two schools. Certainly at the Rosary we have walked a mile in their "pumps" and are forever grateful for the entire Sacred Heart Family. Our prayers go out to all of those effected in Galveston/Houston area and Southwest Louisiana.
Sister Muriel Cameron has learned that Grand Coteau has "lots" of tree damage and roof damage to the assembly room and other areas of the building. The damage is said to be significant enough that it is "not something the father's club can fix". The Grand Coteau website is password protected for parents so I could not get the latest official scoop - but will keep you posted. I can do a little better for Houston - Posted on the Duchesne website - as follows: IKE NEWS UPDATE
"The campus has lost several trees, but the oak is still standing. The oak did lose a large limb. Damage to the school is limited to water inside the Upper School building in front of the receptionist's desk and the front entrance of the school. The White House lost a few shingles off the roof, but is otherwise undamaged. Power, phone systems, and email are still out. The White House does have a generator which is running essential appliances. Currently HISD schools are closed through Wednesday. The reopening of school will depend on when HISD reopens and when power is restored to our campus. Please continue to check the Duchesne website for further updates. Memorial Drive in both directions to campus has power lines down across the road in some places and as of Sunday afternoon, some of these lines were still live. Please do not drive to campus until these lines are removed unless it is absolutely necessary." Wishing you love in the Sacred HeartMarcie Amory |

I have always valued my Sacred Heart education and am still in disbelief that I do not attend anymore. My goal in life is to go back to The Rosary and be a counselor, but until then I feel "homesick," for the society.
If anyone is the D.C. area needs help with anything Sacred Heart related, do not hesitate to email me! I would love to be active in the Sacred Heart society!

Comments: Dear Fellow Alumnae, I am a graduate of Carrollton, Miami, Florida 1967. I am writing in hopes that one of you may have the music to a choral piece our Glee Club sang in a public performance in the Miami Bandshell. The piece is "The House of Wisdom" and was a commissioned work at Manhattanville in 1925 for the canonization of St. Madeleine Sophie. I have already checked at Manhattanville (thank you Sandy Horsman) but it was not in their archives. The publisher was also contacted (J. Fischer & Bro., New York). We have been able to come up with the words, but alas, not the music. Perhaps one of you have it in your scrapbook or music bench. I welcome your contacting me at dkbrewer@bellsouth.net. The music is by Theodore Heinroth, words by Sarah Brownson, RSH., Ph.D. Good luck and thanks for checking. Diane

Good Morning Everyone As we look forward to celebrating the Feast of the Sacred Heart Please hold in your prayers the Kenwood Community and so many alumnae and alumni of the Sacred Heart as they close the last pages of a beautiful, 150 year old story of this very special Convent of the Sacred Heart In the words of Mother Louise Callan spoken in 1937 "Kenwood's history is crowded with deeds of faith and love, high courage and nobility, and sacrifice in its most perfect form" Kenwood is a special place where so many young women entered the Society of the Sacred Heart and became our Mothers. For the past forty years Kenwood has been a place of peace as so many of our RSCJ went there as a final stop before heaven. With love and wishes for Happy Trails always, Marcie

The young men are 26 and try to find a good place, not too expensive. . . Joachim will leave on April 30th for LA." If you are able to help, please e-mail Joachim's mother. Dear Sacred Heart Alumnae and Alumni,
I would like to inform you of our current efforts to prepare the fourth edition of the AASH National Directory of US alumnae/i of the Sacred Heart. This is separate from any effort you may be involved in from your alum school.
AASH has partnered with PCI, Publishing Concepts Inc - the Data Company, to produce our alumnae/i directory. We carefully selected PCI. Their current client list is impressive, with service to 75% of the top 25 universities including Princeton, Harvard, Stanford, and Cornell Universities. They come highly recommended. You can visit their website at the following link: http://www.publishingconcepts.com. Soon, a PCI representative will contact you by phone or later by postcard to verify your information. We appreciate your willingness to support us in this endeavor, as this is a critical link to being a part of the Sacred Heart network of alumnae and alumni. Your timely response to their query is important to us.
If you have any questions regarding this project, please direct them to correspondingsecretary@aashnet.org or directly to PCI at 1-800-982-1590. Thank you in advance for your participation!

As soon as I have more information I will forward it to you by putting it on AMASC website. Good Morning Everyone Below is an urgent request from the President of AMASC for your prayers for our Sacred Heart family in Kenya. This message is also posted on the AMASC website. Please pass this on to others in our extended family. I wish you all a Very Happy New Year filled with peace and love thoughout the world. Happy Trails always, Marcie Amory President AASH National Board of Directors There have been many expressions of concern about the situation in Kenya following the presidential elections. Reports mention violence in Nairobi (particularly in Kibera) and in the Eldoret area, where some of our communities are located. We want you to know that our sisters are gathered at the noviceship in Mbiko, Uganda for their Assembly/Chapter which began on Friday, December 28th.
The provincial of Uganda-Kenya, Ursula Bugembe, called Clare Pratt on Tuesday afternoon, January 1, to say that a postulant who was traveling to her community in Uganda was turned back at a roadblock, and has taken refuge in a church in the Eldoret area. Another church in the area has already been burned and a number have been killed or injured. Ursula's plea was to do whatever we could to mobilize international pressure to stop this violence.
We urge you to PRAY for this situation and to contact the Kenyan ambassador of your country to express our deep concern for this situation.

Good Morning Everyone It doesn't seem possible that four months have passed since our National AASH Conference in New York Since that time your National Board of Directors have been working diligently planning for the 2007-2009 biennium. We have made some bold decisions looking toward the future of AASH. In hopes of keeping you informed, the Esprit de Coeur will be published four times during this biennium. It will contain information on current events in your region, information on the network of schools, updates on the RSCJ"s and the Society's "Mission For Life" Also included will be human interest stories of alums and associations throughout the country. The regional directors will be gleaning information from their associations to include in this very current publication.
