Rota/Charleston/Holy Loch/Apra Harbor Guam : Rota Comments: I spent just under a year in Rota. It was one of the best times of my life. I lived on Calle Capitan Cortez in a pretty crude apartment. It was near the California Bar on what we used to call Red Square (where all the taxis waited for fares). That bar is now an ice cream shop. I went back to Rota in 1995 and it sure is different now. I worked on Mk 45 torpedoes, which are now museum pieces. While we were underway, I was the Sea and Anchor Detail Helmsman. I used to love steering the Holland in and out of port. Would love to hear from old shipmates.

I remember going through the typhoon around Australia - the rocking and rolling, and I loved it. (until I was told that had we rocked another 3 degrees we could have capsized because of the weight of the cranes) But, my 2 1/2 years onboard were fun, even when I was "in trouble". |
