Hi, what a great find.  I'm researching my family tree and am a descendant of the Lee family of Croydon.  My grandmother was Florence Lee née Chapman, she was the daughter of Arthur Lee b1876 also of Croydon.  Arthur was the son of Albert Lee b. 1854. Alberts father was David Lee b.1830.  The family didn't seem to move around much and they all lived at Croydon cum Clopton.
I'm hoping to find out where David came from (I believe it may be Potton, Bedfordshire).  Would love to hear from any of my "family" to help fill in the gaps.

A distant relative sent this site to me.  It holds a wealth of information about my Howe and Lee family.
Thank you.

I have been researching my family history. James & Sarah Law being Parents of David Law (who is my gt, gt grandfather. I dont know if anyone visiting  here has any photographs of the farms mentioned in the croydon farms section. Or in fact any pictures of the "ag labs" which nearly all the residents of croydon were. I am keen to see any group pictures, or any specific people from the history recorded in the speculum gregis.
Many thanks for a great site, I will write to you Steve for a copy of the book.

your photo of the Axe and Compass is not 1900 - it is probably 1915 - the family is my family - they show Walter Tiller with his children - one of them is my mother Maria May Tiller who was born in 1910 in Croydon - Walter died in about 1919 as a result of injuries of the first world war.

I have traced my mother, to her mother, Charlotte Tiller, then Maria Gates, then Charlotte Gates and then Patience Knights, all from the Croydon area.
I have the same photo as theone you have.

My mother always talked of her childhood in Croydon with fond memories and told memany tales of the village life!
