I always thought the Debs looked really cool with the hats! I looked at the video and was not impressed. Where was the crowd? Stands looked empty! Stands weren't /aren't empty here in Houston area for football games. As for Christmas being changed to 'holiday' I guess we should just do away with national day off and no Christmas recess for Congress and everyone should work ,it's just another day

Ginger, the elastic on the hat reminded me when we were juniors and maybe the first football game, someone's hat fell off and she had big, purple brush rollers on top that evidently could be seen by Ms. Thomas.  We were told never to roll up our hair under the hats again.  After wearing that hat for a few hours, your hair really looked icky, too.

Barry, you'd trust me with library paste?  It's delicious, you know.  I'm talking about the white stuff that came in a jar.

High Kicks...That is such a joke..!  I've had a bum left knee, since tryouts..when we were Sophomores.. I was in that group..that the 'whole group' made the Debs.. and there were some officers that came out of that group.. I could never again..kick 6 inches above my head with my left leg...only my right leg.. The Rockettes always kicked 'lower' than us, back then.. They'd surely...beat us LOL...now.. Not everybody remembers our 63 Senior Day performance and I was on the Second Row...on the Stage... The elastic was going out of my tights and I worked on that before that performance, but I didn't work on the Hat' elastic.. My Hat was on my nose. Miss Thomas was laughing during that performance.. Well, at least, I didn't lose the 'tights'. Everyone would have remembered that..!
I only do Gentle Yoga, now.. I mean really, gentle...Yoga..
Namaste..all. Have a nice day... GH...

You guys are making me very glad I was just on the Den staff.  I can still cut and paste with the best of 'em.  Just give me scissors and a jar of white library paste with a brush in it.

Once a Deb, always a Deb

Charlotte, I don't doubt for a minute that you cannot still do the "kick".  I think it would do a lot for attendance at the next '63 Class gathering if the Debs got together and put on a performance. And, all the athletes could run through some drills.  Of course, I was just on the ROTC rifle team.  I guess I could shoot something.  JS could put on a shoe "spit shine" demonstration and get out the Brasso and polish his belt buckle.  Just think of the possibilities!

Charlotte, I am glad you didn't think I was serious. Although I didn't get the same rise out of you as I did when I suggested the drill team get together and do their high kick at out next class reunion. If you can still do that high kick at this age, you are in great shape.

Charlotte, Since the officers made up the routines. Maybe, some of you could volunteer to work with the current SOC drill team and band. The Dallas schools are always begging for all kinds of volunteers in case anyone is interested.

Mary Thomas didn't make up the routines. Our officers did. Mary Thomas gave us our structure, discipline and pride in our school....that is evidently lacking at SOC now. AND probably most schools these days I am not comparing....it is not possible..... am just lamenting the sad change.

"IT DON'T MEAN A THING IF YOU AIN'T GOT THAT SWING."

I thought the students were really trying. They just need some better coaching and a lot of help with their routine. Maybe, Ms. Thomas could volunteer some of her time and help SOC out. Their is a big difference in the backgrounds, economic and social levels of these students compared to when we went to SOC. It is like comparing apples to oranges.

Whoa!  88????  I can't imagine.  And, yes, Sharon...painful describes that video.  I think those are the Pivoteers or some name like that.

Charlotte - it was too painful to watch.  Lynell, I wondered the same thing about the lack of people, but if that was Sprague Field, that would have been the visitor's side.  When I went to Garland's homecoming game last fall, it was so nice to watch the half-time performances.  Rowlett's drill team was superb (probably 45 girls) and Garland's Dashing Debs were good, but way too many (88 girls).

I wonder what Miss Thomas and Mr. Beckhart would say about that SOC performance.  I also wonder why the crowd was so thin.  Thanks for that link, Charlotte.

Barry, Sheriff Joe runs his organization king of like the Confederate army ran Andersonville. I used to drive by it sometimes when I lived in Phoenix.. Righr off Superstition Freeway on way to Apache Junction. Big, tall fence w/razor wire & tents. Guards on horses w/shotguns. No coffee, no tv, no air conditioning, no smoking & pink underware. Sometimes you could see the chain gangs cutting weeds on the roadsides. Joe said Don't complain, our troops in Iraq had it worse--he's right!

I'm not sure what to make of the band's performance? Three drum majors, some innovative moves, but where's the precision of days gone by?

Mike, my special sandwich was Puss 'n Boots cat food, with lettuce and tomato, and a side of Feen-a-Mints in a Chiklets box.  It stopped my thievery problem, too.

Oh..Mike, I forgot to say... "I don't remember you eating in 'Mighty Fine Cooper's' classroom"...? I remember you sitting over by the window, but I don't remember the food..? I wonder if Pat remembers it, of course, Pat and I might have been 'roaming the halls' while you were eating... (when I was married to the Baptist person and around editors..a lot, I learned there were new 'grammar styles'. Since then, I have come up with my own, if you've noticed...?)  Anyway...we should ask Pat/Patricia..if she remembers...?

Noon Day Prayers..? Remember them. In the Nashville Public Schools, we had a moment of silence in the morning.. That suited me fine. In Austin, the Christmas 'thing' was changed to Holiday Celebration..but...
It hasn't bothered me at all. My faith has not existed because of the "Under God" in the Pledge. We all remember when that wasn't there. We had so many cultures, nationalities in Austin. I remember when they put the Sudanese, the Haitians, the Bosnians in the Bi-Lingual Class. That's English/Spanish Class. What a Hoot..! Good thing those kids and their families had a sense of humor..and maybe were desperate, too. I read that the 10 Commandments first appeared in Courthouses when Cecille B. Demille (sp) was advertising the movie,"The Ten Commandments".. Can't get too up in arms over all this stuff.
Whatever you call God, you can still pray and 'think'..and no one will bother you..
I like the 'Moment of Silence' thing.. It respects all.. You can have your little peaceful moment and not be threatened...

I used to always bring my lunch. Tuna w/ mayo, tomatoes. I was starving by 9:30 every day & became skilled at eating it in Mr. Coopers home room class without getting caught at about 10:00 am. Then they started stealing my lunch out of my locker everyday--I never could catch them. I mixed approx. 2 tblespoons drano with the mayo & made them a "special" sandwich. no more lunch problems. never heard about any sick students I guess they were ok. Probably 1 taste & spit it out, anyway--problem solved.--mike

John, I taught for years in the Dallas schools. We never had a noon day prayer in any of them where I taught. Toward the end of my teaching career, we were not allowed to celebrate Christmas. We just had too many different religious groups in almost every classroom. We had students from India, Moslems, Jews etc... Christians no longer make up the majority of school children.
