if you've ever pumped softline to find a hole in the pipe, try using that yellow nylon ski rope instead, it works better most of the time.make your rats nest just like you normally would with softline! also did you know that twice the pump strokes should be almost 4 times the pressure?

Comments: When you are stuck, first thing to figger out is whether you are hydrostatic stuck or the hole caved in on you. When you find out you are differential or hydrostatic stuck here is the plan that will work 99 out of 99 times:
Everyone wants to pull like hell on the stuck pipe, which is needed to a certian extent. But the more you pull on hydrostatic stuck the more you are fixin to pull something apart. Jars will sometimes work for most problems but not differential.
have a hand ready to lock the rotary table in after you put about 30-40,000 extra pounds on the bit and rotate it slowly until you think you are going to twist it off then lock the rotary table in! Chain your brake handle down, go get a cup of coffee in the doghouse, before you finish your first sip you will notice a hell of a jolt. Kinda like the jars went off, but what happened was the downward thrust and torque just broke you loose. Now go back to drilling!!

WHEN YOU HAVE A MUD MOTOR IN THE HOLE AND YOU APPEAR TO BE STUCK AND CAN NOT GET YOUR BUSHINGS DOWN TO THE FLOOR TO TRY TO WORK WITH IT , BRING YOUR PUMPS UP IF YOUR STRING DOES NOT TRY TO TURN OR YOUR PSI IS OK AND YOU HAVE FLOW TRY TO PULL ABOUT 125,000 OVER AND CHAIN IT DOWN SOMETIMES THE MUD MOTOR WILL SHAKE YOU FREE IT USEALLY DOES NOT TAKE LONG FOR THIS TO WORK MYBE 5 MINS OR SO. IT HAS WORKED FOR ME SEVERAL TIMES IN THE PAST. ALSO YOU CAN SPOT 50 BBL/S WATER WITH ABOUT 5 CANS OF E-Z MUD IN SLUGGING PIT AND SPOT IT AROUND YOUR D.C. IT IS CHEAPIER THAN DIESEL AND PIPE LAX WORKS GOOD ALSO. ALL YOUR DOING IS LOWERING YOUR HYD STATIC PSI AROUND YOUR D.C. IN CASE YOUR DIFFF. STUCK TO LET MOVE OF THE WALL. JUST A SUGGESTION TRY IF YOU LIKE IT WORKS. HAS NEVER FELLED ME.

If your PDC bit becomes balled up, this only work if you do not have a down hole motor, you can set it on bottom with 15-20,000 on bit, without rotating, and pump 600-700 GPM for aprox. 10-15 minutes. Best to do during rig service. This should clean the blades, also helps if furing this time you dump walnut shell or nut plug.

Comments: We've all seen these hands that don't quite understand english; you say open a valve, they close it, you say close it and they open it and then give you a stupid look when you get pissed. Hand signals don't work either cause they just shrug their shoulders. So I have a sure fire fix for that.
During a big frac when you got a few detroits screaming out a few thousand HP and a blender tender who's already maxed out ("I lost a mag dammit!"), put the ginzel on the water tanks. Just keep him away from the valves and away from the pressure iron. You don't want some worm smacking a line with 5000 psi on it with a hammer just like you don't want him to shut a suction valve on your blender when you're doing 70 bpm downhole and on the edge of a screenout.
If it's his first day, cut him a break. If he's been around more than a month, run him off.

When POOHing, number the stands both ways. Example with 106 stds in hole: 1st stand racked back=1/106, 2nd = 2/105, and so forth. The added total of these two numbers will always be one digit higher, and if they add up correctly 20-30 stands later when the hole is dragging like a b*tch, you can look at your tally sheet and know where and why possibly-slide, formation change, etc. This is the hardest to explain to the worms that have been flooding us recently. 18 and gung ho but can't add or subtract without a pencil and paper.

Ok, so you're pulling the Rotating Head, you just pulled the bushings, Picking up on it and the Head is hitting the Master Bushing...instead of snubbing the pipe off and pulling it over with the Air Hoist...just pull the Master Bushing up about a foot or 2 out of the table, then it can move left or right, and pull the Rotating Head through the Rotary and up above the Master Bushing, then set the Master Bushing back in the table, just takes a sec, cause you alredy have your bushing pullers attached to your Air Hoist......Enjoy!

if you are close to a bit trip or td and your swivel packing start leaking and it will be quicker to finish than fix the packing, build a sweep of walnut shell and mica and some finely shredded mud sacks. pump it down the hole. most of the time it will stop the leak for a pretty good while

if your bit is balled pretty bad and a normal sweep won't unball it, try using bout 30 gallons of freshwater, bag of sapp and bucket of drilling detergent. pumpit down the hole. get the driller to calculate when it hits the bit and get him to pick up on it. ease it back to bottom and set a couple thousand on it and spin the heck out of it. most of the time it works for us. gotta make sure you get it out of the hole before making a connection and i wouldn't reccomend it in in a pay zone. if you are worried bout your waterloss, calculate surface to surface and blind freshwater across shaker.

if you are drilling in a area that has gumbo bad right below the conductor and flow line stops up. you can put a wiper rubber on and a collar clamp over that. set it down gently ontop of conductor pipe and ease the pumps in for a second and then kick em out. 9 outta 10 times it will unstop instead of coming over the conductor pipe. take off clamp and rubber and go back to drilling

ok so your goin through your tri-plex pump and you hate puttin the rods back in cause you gotta roll the pump to get the pony rods clamped right......... wrong what you do is put the heads in the liners put all your valves back together and all your caps on. at this point everything should be together except your rods arent touchin the pony rods therefore they are not clamped now kill your pump motor and then kick it the pump. the charger pump will push all the rods into place in a second. make sure the pump is kicked out or youll dead head your charge pump

ok so say your drilling and your sting weighs 140,000 and your shakin the pipe dry before a connection and your break handle falls to the floor what do you do....... first off you should be usind your hydro or dynomatic if not kick it in fast now most people would say clutch it to slow the string down. this is a no-no you might burn up the clutch and then your screwed. what you do is let it fall into the kelly bushings and as the blocks start to lay over you clutch it. its alot less weight. then you call a hand to the floor and have him lock the rotory table and then you ingage both rotary and drum clutch it will cause the drawtool to put the weight of the blocks on the rotary lock then you call the boss and tell him you gotta problem

Comments: If you are having problems pulling slips out by your self there is an easy way to do it. DO NOT PULL FROM THE TAIL SIDE! Grab both the left and right side handles of the slips and squeeze tightly. As pipe is being hoisted out of mouse or rat hole, keep pinching both side and then push slips off the hoist. It's less back breaking and safer.

The rig I am on uses and old school IDECO 261 B rotory table with foot lock, and a hex kelly. They don't have a pneumatic rotory lock or swivel lock. When orientating tool phase, sometimes I need to go to the left just 5 to 15 degrees, or right 280 degrees. If the driller just slacks off to bottom, the downhole motor torque will rotate drill string and kelly to the left. The easier you set the weight on bottom the easier the torque to the left. Trust me, when you have 1 to 2 turns reactive torque in hole, this method is a lot easier on your foot.

When changing heads and liners in all the pumps( EG. -starting to slimhole) Back off jam nuts , remove rod clamps, etc,and have all of them ready to pull at the same moment, but leave the Head and rod in each liner.Pull them each with a nylon strap, and chain using the forklift . When you get them all on the ground, stand the edge of each liner on a couple 4x4s and use the carriage on the forklift to push them through, replace the heads with the new size, stand the replacement liners on a pallet and use the carriage to push the rod/head combos back into the liners. Now set the pallet over by your pump and reinstall the liners using the forklift chain/strap combo, being careful not to pinch a liner gasket!Tighten the jamnuts, then line a charge pump or mud mixer up on some fluid(suction/premix) Close the suction valve to your pump, start the mud mixer/charge pump and with a Hand watching to the side of the pump and out of danger, slowly crack the suction valve to your pump, the gradual pressure will usually seat all 3 rods against the pony rods, have the hand tell you when they are seated, then you just have to clamp them, no rolling the pump by hand! changing rod liner combos this way will cut your time AND LABOR in half. Dont forget to lock that pump out before work begins! Stay Safe

Comments: You need to put on a wiping rubber but you dont want to pull out those damn rotary table blocks...Here is what you do...Break off your kelly, dope the center of your rubber and set it centered on your stump, lower kelly and stab it through the hole and into the tool joint of your stump, grab the top of your kelly bushing and pull yourself up and wrap your legs aroung the rubber (like you were trying to sit on it) and push it down past the tool face and down the pipe, tighten down kelly (make connection) and rais pipe up a ways, now grab a swamp bar and place it between the elevators and the rubber and slowly and carefuly push the rubber down below the rotary table. (you may have to work it once or twice in different positions around the rubber) Just be careful of your hands and dont drop the swamp bar down the hole!
It may take a few tries to get the hang of it, but once you do it saves a boat load of time!

Comments: Ok, I will start this off with a couple tips for new Derrickhands....When the water is dirty in your water box and you think you may have a head leaking, but cant tell which one, have a Hand shut the water to the Liner Washers off while you stand there and check each Liner/Head combo, The Liner that is leaking will have a little mud coming out the back with each stroke. Change it now so you wont have to change a Liner later. Be sure and turn the Liner washers back on!
Ok, Ill throw another bone your way....You mixed that dang polymer to fast and now your hopper is stopped up, Been beating a ground rod in it 5 minutes and just packing it tighter, all the while the Rig Floor is calling wanting a Sweep because of the 200 jillion '/hr ROP they got going on up there. Ok...Heres what ya do...Line your mud mixer centrifigal( or what ever pump your using) on the Mud Hopper, make sure you just have 1 discharge valve open, have hand wearing face protection(Just in case) stand at the Mud House door, Tell him NOT TO BE LOOKING DIRECTLY DOWN THE HOPPER , Just tell him to yell when you get some mud back up through the Hopper, then , with the pump running, Go quickly close , then open the discharge valve.(Thats right, I said CLOSE it) slam it closed and then open as fast as you can, then, if that does not free the clog close it a split second longer,I have never had to close one for more then a second or 2, and if you do, your gonna have a mess! Do it quickly, and it will free the hopper, without the mud ever leaving the hopper! Now that you got it open, clear the Gel out and go get that Steamer Wand and some face protection and cut that polymer out of the way of your jet, takes 30 seconds and your back in business.
I have 100 tips and tricks to make your day easier/will share more here soon....Stay Safe
