Comments: Giovanni Abreu, Madison Park rule schools Rally bests Brighton By Dan Ventura and Joe Vieira / City Finals Tuesday, May 26, 2009 The MP Hitting Machine woke up in the nick of time. Trailing by five entering the bottom of the sixth inning, the Madison Park baseball team rallied to win the Boston City League title as Giovanni Abreu’s RBI single in the seventh brought home Alfred Santana with the winning run in an 11-10 victory against Brighton. “These guys have played with a lot of heart all season long,” Cardinals coach Mike Viggiano said. “We’ve been down in games before, but the reason we’ve come back is their desire. Even when we were down 10-5, we never got down, as you could probably tell by the noise in the dugout.” After the teams spent the first five innings in a seesaw battle, Brighton appeared to have taken control of the game in the sixth. Ariel Tejada led off with a walk and Jonathan Rosa reached when his sacrifice bunt was misplayed. A passed ball moved the runners up a base before Freddy Soto slapped an infield hit to bring in Tejada. Freddy Cabral followed with an RBI single, Ivan Rosado walked to load the bases and Lorenzo Cruz produced a three-run double. Madison Park (16-4) clawed back in its half of the inning. The key blow was a two-run double by Joab Fuertes (4-for-4, five RBI) off reliever Soto to slice the deficit to 10-9. “We knew we could come back against them,” Fuertes said. “With our lineup, we know we can score runs, and we did it again.” Abreu, who moved from left field to the mound in the sixth inning, retired the Bengals (13-7) in order in the seventh to set the stage for the epic comeback. William Miranda led off the Cardinals seventh with a single before Santana (three runs) drew his third walk of the game. Juan Figueroa greeted new pitcher Alberto Fernandez with an RBI single to tie the score at 10, and Abreu capped off the comeback with a sharp single to left.
