Where are you from? Australia Comments: Great site. I found it while trying to track the family we think our grandfather was part of: James and Ellen Richards (nee Collins) both born c1860. Ten kids from 1881 - 1902: Alma, Olive, Ralph, Raymond (GF), Laura, Horace, Roland, Alton (KIA WW1), Orman (F), Risden(M). Kids all seem to have been born around Shareshill. Alma aged 24 may have married Edward Jones in 1905 at St Mary's Shareshill. Laura aged 24 may have married George E Williams in 1914 at St Mary's Shareshill. Risden aged 30 married Dorothy Stacey locally in 1932. They lived in Shareshill, no children. Dorothy predeceased Risden who died in 1988. In 1891 census James, Agricultural Labourer has the family Address listed as Heals Farm if anyone can identify that I would be grateful. Interested to read Phil Richards' comments re Moses Richards. 1861 census lists Moses Richards 39 Gardener, Anne 37 (W) and Thomas 10 (S) scholar At '25 Bilbrook'. At '27 Bilbrook' lived William Richards 25 Ag Lab, Sarah 25 (W) and James 2 (S). Four families have the same address numbered 27,26,25 and 24. At the top of the page is the address Bilbrook Villa for another family. Can anyone make sense of this? I believe 2yo James is my GGFather as in later censuses a William and Sarah and younger kids are close neighbours of him and Ellen. Not sure how the geography fits in, but Codsall certainly is mentioned. Whatever the outcome the site has been fun, keep it up. Regards Laurie Richards

Where are you from? Brisbane, Australia Comments: I have been living in Brisbane for only 3 months, before that Dubai, Taiwan and Derby, but Bilbrook is where my roots are, my Mum & Dad still live there and my Dad, Jack was instrumental in the erection of the sign in the middle of the village green, having moved to Bilbrook from Norwich in the 1930s and working with BPs until he retired, only to subsequently become a stalwart of the Boulton Paul Heritage Centre at the old factory. I am coming home (yes - its still home!) on holiday at Easter. My memories of 1960s Bilbrook: Shops - The shops near the school where I used to spend my three penny bit was called Wheatleys and was a greengrocer with a confectionery counter just to the right of the door. I could talk for hours about mojos, lucky bags, flying saucers, gobstoppers, fireman's hoses.... etc etc. Other shops there were a dry cleaners (I think - Sketchleys??), Whitehouse and Siviters Hardware, A greengrocer, shoe shop and haberdashers. Opposite side of the road - Frosts the Chemist, Chandlers Butchers, Hancocks (?) Greengrocer, the Post Office. Next to the Woodman (then run by a chap called Roy Millward and his wife and their son Warren(?)) was Fletcher's Garage, repair shop and coal yard. I worked here on the pumps with a load of other local lads and can remember the family (Brothers George, Henry & Bill, George's wife Nelly and son Rob). 5 Star was 6/8d a gallon!!!! I can also remember Bill's wife Irene who was called "Aunt" by all of the pump boys. She was a lovely, gracious lady who I well remember, who only died within the last couple of years - a sad loss. I can also just remember the "New" shops by the green. The furthest up Duck Lane was a barbers run by Bruce Holding (Holden?) a friend of my family and his son Michael a school mate of mine at the primary school. There was also a record shop with listening booths where I bought my first record (Telstar) for 6/6d, a greengrocers run by Peter Broadbent (Ex Wolves footballer), a newsagents, a hardware shop and a chippy at the end. There were more but I can't recall them. Down along Pendeford Mill Lane, of course, was Madeley's (still run by Roy, who used to deliver to the house weekly, all orders being in a small red book that I would take into the shop for my Mum, and a chippy (Charnel's I think, who had two daughters Vicky and ??). The old Chandler's Farm House was next to the village green and I can just remember it derelict. There were two trees which, if I remember correctly, were at the front and rear of the house, and these are (or were) still evident in front of the flats next to the village green. Lane Green CP School used to have two footpaths along its perimeter, both of which passed in narrow alleys down to Bilbrook Lane and disappeared long ago, although I think that the alleyway immediately to the right of the school drive is still there. We used to go trainspotting on the bridge. In those days there were loads of old steam locos from Oxley sheds going to Shrewsbury and an hourly non-stopping express to London Paddington from Birkenhead & vice versa. Sometimes we would take the train to Low Level (9d return, stopping at Dunstal Park) or occasionally to Shrewsbury where we would get the "stopper" back. This was the only stopping train that had a steam loco on the front, the rest being diesel units! It arrived at Birches & Bilbrook Halt at 18:20. I can (as per another corespondent) remember the Brambles between Dam Mill Lane and Downie/Florence Road before the police houses were built when It extended right up to the village centre before Brookfield Road was built, and the old Greyhound Pub was still called the Doctor's Surgery. Happy days - was it always sunny (apart from winter '63 of course)? Paul Holmes |
