As a kiddie cruiser I spent several of my teenage years aboard the Wood. Shortly before we were to leave " the yards" in Portsmith for a pre med shakedown cruise, I read a notice on the quarterdeck bulletin board that changed my life. It was a invitation to attend a ships picnic. The lead line was " Officers and their LADIES and enlisted men and their WIVES are invited to attend......... The distinction between Ladies and Wives hit me with the force of a revelation. As a impressionable 19 year old I decided then and there to go to college and maybe marry a lady. I did both and life has been very good to me. I owe a great deal to the experiances and wonderful guys I was privleged to know during my time in the Navy and aboard the WOOD.

Subject: Dr. Wood Honored at U.S. Naval Academy
Comments:
I was in Annapolis on August 112 and saw that Dr. Wood is honored in a special exhibit at the Naval Academy Visitors Center. The exhibit on one wall commemorates the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War and the naval officers, both north and south, who fought in it. The exhibit consists of small 8x10 placards with pictures of the officers and a brief synopsis of their service in the Civil War. The placard for Dr. Wood mentions his service at the start of the war and service on the blockade squadrons. It also states that Wood Avenue on the academy grounds was named for Dr. Wood.

Glad to hear from you and, of course, you know living as close as you do to Mobile, you're going to have to think really, really hard of a reason not to attend the Mobile reunion this October. LMAO! I communicate with Jim ("JD") Gill (PC a year or 2 before you) quite a bit and he and Becky are planning on attending. I've also talked with Monty Stover once. Don't know if he's going to make it to Mobile or not. Take care and hope to see you in Mobile.

Yeah, I know what you mean when some one comes up to you and goes "crap" YOU still alive!!!!! I don't know where (East to West) Midland lies or whether it's close enough to Mobile for you to make the reunion, but it seems we're getting a few ol' shipmates from the early 60s registered. If you're interested, you can check-out the "Look Who's Coming" page. I'm hoping to hear from Tony Caminiti (the Mobile Chair) soon and I'll update that file. Take care.

Comments: Just checking in to the web page to let others know that I'm still alive and still riding my motorcycle. I found one of my friends that I joined the Navy with in 1959 just about a month ago. I had lost contact with him for over 52 years.
I thought he was dead and he thought I was too! LOL!
I didn't think much about the Willie Wood when I was on the ship, but sure wouldn't give up any of the memories I got there.
Thanks for keeping her memory alive.

Comments: Hello David: Thanks for checking-in. When we move a shipmate from our living crew members to our decease shipmates data base, we don't put much information in, so I can't see how many reunions your Father attended. I'm glad that they meant so much to him. He was on the Willie Wood really early; back when she was new and clean ('50-'52). Still I'm sure it was hot being a Boiler Tech (BT). Originally I was an Electrician's Mate (EM) and we were called "cool air snipes"! If you get a chance and wouldn't mind, I'd appreciate it if you could e-mail me (or post it back here in the Guest Log) the date of your Father's passing. Thanks and take care. Hello Robert: Thanks for checking in. I checked our data base (both living crew members and deceased) and we have no info on Capps, Veal, nor McGowan - - all names that I'm very familiar with seeing as I was Suppo at that time. (I could not, for the life of me, remember Capps's name; Eddie was a CS2 but got first class while on the Wood). Also, if you could update your info I'd appreciate it! Your USPS address (in Arkoma) is undeliverable and your e-mail (with 53-54 in it) is invalid. Thanks and although Mobile AL might be a bit of a trek for you, maybe consider checking out the reunion this October. and I agree with you, our time in Greece were some of the best times ever.

I know that there is a bunch of stuff that various shipmates bring to the various reunions. Plus there's Wood memorabilia that the Association has. Also, not under "Our History" that there are various things. It would really fantastic if you could scan the articles and logs and anything else Willie Wood related into an Adobe PDF file and send to me ( USSWOOD.SECRETARY@DD715.ORG ) and we would be more than happy (dare I say ecstatic) to upload that material to the Wood site.
