In Bed with Mosquitoes

According to Bettie Reeves, if you doubt the power of a single entity to have an impact, you've never been in bed with a mosquito! When women stay at home and think their vacation will bear any resemblance to a getaway, they delude themselves. Within minutes, they are expected to exhibit their mosquito-power all over again. Cook-outs become wife- or mom-driven drudgeries that other people enjoy and leave before clean-ups are done. Clean-outs become limited family commitments that find the keeper of the house trying to keep the family on task.

It's been said, by a wee one, that mothers are made of clouds and angel hair and a little bit of mean. If you're contemplating a stay-at-home vacation, pull forth your mosquito- meanness and demand a heavenly vacation. You deserve it!

That Staycation is No Vacation for Me

A staycation is no vacation for me, if I have to be here with all my stuff and all my responsibilities around me. When I'm away, I can relax, knowing that I don't have this stuff to do, but I just can't let go of it when I'm here and looking at it.

The only way I could have a staycation is if I had a full time maid, cook and office help for a week before and during the "staycation." so that I could really just enjoy being here.

For what that would cost, I could be on the Riviera – or at least in Yosemite.

Oh, What to Wear When in the Air?

Elastic waists, sleeveless tops
To keep you comfy when it's hot.
Sitting on the tarmac, waiting to go
You need to be able to wiggle your toes.
Take a shawl to throw around your shoulders
Will come in handy if you feel colder.
Do carry-on only and keep it light
Who wants to spend vacation time being uptight
Waiting for lost luggage and filling out forms
When you could be seeing the sights or heading back home.
If on a long flight, compression socks are a must--
Don't want your veins to go bust.

The difference between a tourist and a well-heeled world traveler lies, in part, in a few carefully chosen accessories.  These 4 tricks make my travel both carefree and elegant:

1.       It’s all about the shoes - It’s easier now to find shoes that are comfortable, versatile and still stylish.  My ideal travel shoe is a closed-toe pump designed for walking.  It has an air-cushioned sole, an ankle strap for security and a slight heel to help keep my back aligned while strolling through parks, museums and palazzos.

2.       Forgo jewelry - Instead, invest in a few inexpensive scarves.  I wear them as headbands, ponytail holders, belts, or wrapped around my wrist for a splash of color.  They also take up NO space.

3.       Sunglasses – A must whether I’m having Tea in the Sahara or Mid-Winter Borscht in Siberia. Invest in a pair that fit comfortably, provide UVA and UVB protection and are large enough to protect the delicate skin around your eyes.

4.       Simple makeup - SPF face lotion, lip balm, mascara, concealer (for minor imperfections), and just the right shade of red lipstick keeps me looking fresh and feeling “pulled-together”, day or night.  Top with a little powder for a finished look.

Title:  Black and White and REaDy All Over

My travel tip is to pack travel clothes that are black and white.  I like to take black and white prints as well as solid white and solid black.  All of the items go with black shoes and a black bag.  I feel like I am ready for anything from a day in the city to a night on the town.  Take a couple of pairs of black shoes…one for comfort and one pair that has a little, foxy heel .  One faux pau I will never forget was wearing  a pair of barefoot sandals in early April in New York City.  Everyone else was still wearing boots!
