City Heliopolis near Cairo State Egypt Country Egypt Comments: Very interesting site, unfortunately for me I cannot be of any help for jews of Egypt, since I was born in 1956 and had only one classmate jew in the college de la Sainte famille (peres jesuites) of Cairo. His name was Selim Ratib and we only new he was jew after he left the country. However my father georges gamil, was associated with albert amiga until 1964, the year of the nationalisation of their common asset (magasins mabrouk). He also had when he was young a girlfriend named Rachel Lisbona, I met her with my dad in Drancy near paris in 1981 or 82. No news about her brother who remained in cairo, baptised coptic orthodox. Their was also another one called Eskinazy but he was older. I also knew 2 jewish university classmates Joyce benjamen & Fernand Cohen but they too were older. By the way, you probably got it, I'm christian. when I read a message signed Albagli, I remember my mom (french) had a friend she referred to as madame Albagli. Thank you for this site which gave me a good hour of pleasure pushing me back to the lovely egypt and wonderfull cosmopolitan heliopolis of my childhood, when ladie going to the market near cinema Normandie used to speak a mixture of franco-arabe, ya habaybee, c'etait vrrrrraiment le bon temps mesh keda. Before I leave the net I send my best wishes to all of you not forgetting our moslem compatriots who participated in the site from alexandria or Cairo and the christian coptic too. PS. I won't ever visit Egypt because I have no illusions about what Egyptians really think about Jews. Ironically, that's exactly what many Muslims want. According to Eman, only those Jews who are willing to live as a minority within larger Islamic societies, who are willing to surrender their right to govern themselves and the right to self-determination, and who wish to be told what to do or not to do by Muslims, are welcome in Egypt. But the minute they start demanding to be on an equal footing with Muslims, the welcome mat gets pulled out from under them. Eman's post reinforces the truth about the Israeli-Arab conflict: 22 Arab states are unwilling to tolerate even one Jewish one.

Our father is originally from Cairo, and our family tree dates back many glorious generations in Egypt. I want to first mention that I have just finished Lucette Lagnado's breathtaking account of her familyt, "Man in the Whiteshark Skin Suit." I too could not put it down, as so many of you have commented here. Amidst the bursts of laughter and tears during my commutes to and from work, I devoured the book in just a few days. Although I am not from Egypt and I have never had the opportunity to visit, I felt intrisically conencted to her story: the names, places, night life, music, food, scents and sights of Egypt have all been described to me by my father and relatives in vivid detail. So much of what she describes in her book is so poignantly related and ingrained in how I grew up, how I interact with my family and friends, and how I view the world. I would also like to say that this website is a fantastic resource, one that I hope to contribute to and explore. Thank you!

My father David born 1909 in Baghdad and came to Egypt in 1912. However my grandfather went back by himself to Iraq. Any one with info about my father tree ancestry is mostly welcome. My mother Sarina (Nina) was born in Alexandria in 1919. Maiden name is Hamaoui. Info about my mother ancestry will also be welcomed.I have very beautiful memories from Egypt.
