Comments: I was with Kilo 3/5 in '66 and made initial crossing on the Renville. Was in the Battle of Hastings as well as eight others, if memory serves me right. We just got onto the website and have made reservations for the June '09 reunion. Looking forward to meeting y'all. If anyone knows anything about Sgt. Edward E. Jackson, who was wounded in a "friendly" minefield, not sure of date, but sometime in '66, please let me know. "Doc" Zender
Comments: Joined SU#1, H&S, 3/5 in August, 1965, and was with the battalion from the time it was reformed in October, 1965 as the last 1stMarDiv battalion still in the states until 25 July, 1966. Battalion went to Okinawa on the USS Renville, trained at Camp Schwab, and H&S Co boarded USS Princeton as SLF. I was the battalion legal clerk, and managed to go incountry with the S-2 scouts and LtCol Bronars on UNION, DECKHOUSE II, and HASTINGS. If anyone knows whereabouts of Bob Rhoades, Pete Oliver, Cahill (can't remember 1st name), I'd like to get in touch with them.
Comments: Hi to all Marine Corps Vets Would like to say see you at the reunion. Back problem's and traveling make it hard for me. I find being old Marine harder than a young one. Time in Corps best of life. Terry Shepardson
Comments: Served with Lima 3/27th Marines & Lima 3/5 Marines 1968 to 1969.Wounded May 1st 1969,then medically discharged. OooRahh, keep up the good work India Co.L/cpl Hand
Comments: I spent my entire four years, 1966 to 1970, in the Marine Corps Air Wing. I was at Chu Lai in '67 and '68. While we had "incoming" on a regular basis, and were hit hard during Tet of "68, you Marines in the bush were the ones I most respect. I became a Marine at P.I. in the Summer of 1966, and I am so proud today to be in such good company. Semper Fi
Comments: Just found "Yukon Harris's" account of Deckhouse and Hastings SLF operations off Princeton. If you can get this to him it might help his efforts. I was the NGLO(26 Oscar) that went in with H&S 3/5. I may have some of maps and notes showing Arty and NGF support missions (if my kids did not trash them). If anyone is still trying to unscramble those days I would be glad to make them available. Officially I was 1st MarDiv Asst NGFO for about a year and a half. Any time the Marines didn't need me I got loaned to Arvn, ROK Marines, PF LF and even US Army Americal Div. I don't know how many of my operational maps survived my kids, (and I am in no hurry to dig though it unless I would do someone some good). The accounts of Hastings seem to vary dramatically and my memory does not seem to match at all. I remember second Helo lift from coastal sand dunes to blocking force position across a valley, (2 line Companies, H&S+105&107 Batteries, 2 Line Co) late in afternoon, at dusk Green tracer 12.7s incoming from ridge line on left, then firing two Destroyers, a Cruiser, the 105s, 107s and 175 from Dong Ha all night long , walking the rounds all around that valley, and the next morning being told the got 8 6X6 Truck loads full of crew served weapons and an estimated 6000 bodies left and nearly twice that being drug off supposedly we had destroyed 2 NVA Divisions. Then moving farther inland, about 2 days later the NVA resurrected and hit 2 of the line companies hard in positions neither Arty or Naval Guns could effectively support. The NVA got in close and tight where our supporting arms were unless. Anyway that is the Squid's memory eye view and after 40 years I don't know what is fact and what is minds eye fill-in to rationalize the irrational or a mixture of over a year of nights under a poncho with a map, radio and red lens flashlight (12/65 to 8/67 ?). It was the best job I ever had...I even consider transferring to USMC but realistically, I never could have been a peacetime Marine. Robert W Keeler Former LT USN, USNA Class 63 Laguna Woods CA

I found a gentleman named Dorian Dula who said John was with Delta company. My mom gave me his medals and ribbons, I was looking for photos of him to put in a shadow box I have. Comments: Hello to all. I would like to pass along some VERY important info. Compensation (CRSC) eligibility to include those who were medically retired under Chapter 61 with less than 20 years of service, effective Jan. 08. This means that if you were medically retired from the service --- you can now draw VA compensation and military pension. Semper Fi Bruce King
Comments: Roy Oden and I went to high school together in the Spokane valley and joined the Marine Corps together in 1968. He was KIA in Quang Nam Province on or about 18 June 1969. He is buried in the Point Loma National Cemetery in San Diego. On your Wall of Honor he is listed as a member of Lima 3/5. I gave 10 years to the Corps and during that time, and after the Internet arrived, I have tried to find someone who knew him and may have served with and/or been with him when he was killed. The last I time I saw Roy was a few days before he shipped out. I would like to hear from any of you who knew Roy. At a later time (October 69 to June 70) I was attached to Headquarters, 5th Marine Regiment at An Hoa with LSU #1 by the airstrip. During that time I met several members of Headquarters, Kilo and Lima 3/5. If any of your members remember me I would not mind hearing from them. Joe Talouse (sp) is the only full name I remember. You have created a great site here. I am glad I came across it. Keep up the good work and Semper Fi. David L. Churchill Former Gunnery Sergeant USMC

Comments: 8-1-08 I came across this site while surfing the net. I didn't know the BN had a reunion every year. i served with Lima Co. from early November 67 thru mid August 68. There's a lot of Lima names missing. We have a reunion every year. Just had one a little over two weeks ago in Washington DC. Next year in Charleston, SC. I served with some that are listed on your site; Ollie Forte, William Klawitter, Doug Young, Alfred Wyant, Wally Loucks (Gunny) and Robert Snowden (Skipper).
Comments: Semper Fi To all you jarheads out there from 3/5 glad to be back in the loop again. Hope to see you guys June 09. Mokie
Comments: Hello Jar Heads I Rrecently came across this site and was reading the roster of names. You seem to left quite a few names off. is there a reason? I know that all those not listed have passed on. The Gunny
Comments: My father is Capt. Gerald C. Bacon, USMC, Retired. I am currently going through his military memoribilia and am excited to have pictures of some of you! One in particular lists: Leroy, Marion, Brazetis, Lark, Melendez, Kear, Bledsoe, Langston, Benton, Robinson. It's dated December 1967. He also has the Navy Comendation Medal for December 27, 1967. I know so little of the history, and am looking forward to venturing into this. Thank you!
Comments: I am trying to find some one that might have been with a Marine named W. Culberison? I have no first name and he was with platoon 290 at PI in June 1966. I saw also that a Thomas Crowley was listed with Mike 3/5 and was wondering if he was in same platoon at boot camp as I have been looking for him too. If any one knows either would please email me or call 302-492-3740. We have located 35 from the platoon and also ten that have deceased. Thank you all. Semper Fi Marvin Fortney
Comments: Greetings from an "older" 3/5er in Korea. My old skipper of Hotel 2/5 ,Vietnam, Gene Bowers, told me about your reunion process. He later served with 3/5 in Vietnam after a tour with us H 2/5. I had the great privilege of fighting with Able Co. 1/5 during our raid on Hill 31A, UnGok, and then with weapons co. 3/5 as demolition specialist and machinegunner with How co. 3/5 and George Co. 3/5 during our so-called Nevada Cities battles on Outposts Vegas, Reno and Carson. I was on Vegas and then Outpost Dagmar (named after the starlet Dagmar for their common shape)the night the war ended. Colonel Walt was our commanding officer of the regiment and Captain Kriter was weapons c.o. with Lieutenant Quinn our platoon leader. They were the finest of the fine in my opinion. Of course in those days we had different battalion arrangements and organizations as well as different company mottos. The words on our George Company Colors were: They shall not pass by George! The best one I thought was on the colors of Item Company: Fight'em with Item, we're hell when we're well and we're never sick! I borrowed this for my weapons platoon with Hotel 2/5 in Vietnam. I see someone who can't spell put the words "Get Some" on 3/5's colors! It should read "Git Some!" In Korea the Fifth Marines used to say "you may stumble and fall but remember to always fall forward! Thank you for this opportunity to contact you and the wonderful bunch of jarheads of 3/5! Harold Wadley,USMC, Sgt. (Ret)
Comments: My name is Mike Boggess. I saw the web site of Mike Alden and wanted to get a in touch with him. I also was in Mike co. 3/5 and I was there on hill 332 during operation taylor common. I wanted to send him a picture of Merryman, Main, Christiansen and Johnson. I was in the second platoon machine guns. That hill was a memory for a lot of people. Still somthing funny always crosses my mind that happened there. When Lt. Treadwell got a round in the cheek they bandaged him up so that when his face swelled he looked like Oliver hardy. Not really funny now I guess but it keeps me from thinking about all the gore. Just got out of the nut house over that hill in particular.
Comments: Hello, I was reading some of the comment's and It bring's back a lot of memories! I was in Nam in 69-70, I was in Charlie Co, 1st Battlion 4th Marines, I was also in India Co, 3rd Bn 5th Marines, I'am trying to find a buddy of mine who was with me, his name is Jeff Lafave( or LeFave), he would be about 58-59 by now. If anyone know's him or heard of him, or knows how I can find out any info, Please email me. I would also like more info on the Reunion. Hang Tight!!

Comments: The Site is "EXCELLENT". Extremely well done. I came here this evening to read the prayer for and remember Bill and Kayla. Bill is a wonderful person and Kayla has left a mark on every 3/5 Nam Vet and his spouse . Of course I speak of the Purple heart ceremony performed each year by Bill and Kayla at the Reunions. Through Kayla, Bill was able to instill some respect in each of us for the significant person in our lives who has lived with us and all of our Nam baggage for all these years. I will always love Kayla for her part in this and my wife will as well. I thank God that I have been fortunate enough to have served with Bill and to have had the opportunity to learn from Bill and Kayla. Kayla, may you rest in Peace and know that you are remembered and appreciated by those of 3/5 who love you. Bill, my thoughts and prayers are with you at this time of grief and may you find inner Peace and a place in your heart to hold Kayla in living memory always. Comments: Hello, Very nice website. It is nice to see folks leaning forward and doing what is right to preserve history I'm writing as the cousin of 2LT Vincent B. Lee. He was with Company I, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division. He was killed in action during a search and destroy operation on 23 November 1969. I'm a veteran as well, yet 20 years younger than my cousin. I've always admired my cousin and, as I get older, the appreciation is deeper and richer. If any of you know my cousin "Vinny", I'd like to share that he is missed deeply and that he comes from a family with deep military heritage. He is the son of a WWII and Korean Veteran (Frank Lee - Army). Yet from his mother's side, my side, (Maiden name of Burke), here are some brief highlights: Two generations of Burke's served from WWII through the Global War on Terror. Key Stats: o 8 served. 3 children and 5 grandchildren of Michael and Sarah Burke o 88% of all males served o 1 Gold Star Mother o Over 130 years service to the nation o 1 USMA (West Point) Graduate o 2 Norwich University graduates o 1 Green Beret o 5 Paratroopers o 1 Air Assault o 3 Retired Military (4th Pending - 19 years) From the 6 males that served on Active Duty: o 1 Killed in Action, November 1969 o 1 Silver Star o 4 Bronze Stars o 3 Purple Hearts (4th TBD) o 1 Disabled Veteran o 1 Buried at Arlington National Cemetery o 1 Buried at Bourne National cemetery From a military family that misses Vinny, we wish to thank you for being by his side - then and now. Comments: I've looked at the web site several times but have not seen John Lee Burton's name on the wall of honor. He came in country with me 9/1/69 and was KIA by a booby trap along with 3 others on 9/24/69. I'm sure he was with India. We were very close to their position when the explosion went off. My memory is not good, but I seem to recall all the bad stuff.
Comments: I am looking for information about my Uncle Jerry Hailey who was killed in Vietnam in July 1966. I would like to hear from anyone there. |
