Just an interesting side note about my Dad Ed Stull who was shot down over Holland in 1944.  Apparently Ann Frank, the little girl who's diary in world known, witnessed his bomber crash near her town.  Her March 23 diary entry reflects this.  What a strange coincidence!

My dad was 1077209 Pte Murray and was captured on 18th June 1944 and taken by cattle truck to Stalag 4B where he remained until the Russians liberated them at the end of the war. He was friends with an American Digby Wardlaw who died from TB at sea while going home. They also had a dutch friend called Pete who lived near Krefeld. Dad and Digby ran a christian union in the camp. I know so little about his life there and would welcome comments. He died some years ago and never really wanted to talk about it all. Now my grandkids are asking questions which I want to be able to answer.

My Dad is mentioned in the roommates  list. I just caame across this web site and have only just begun to explore it. Dad was the navigator  when his B-17 was shot down over Holland on his first mission.  The rest of his time was spent in the camp at Barth until liberated by the russians who came riding up to the gate on horseback.

My uncle was a POW at Stalag 317. He was captured, I believe, in France. He never talked about his experience so I have little to go on. He was a Staff Sergeant in the US Army Infantry from Scranton, PA. Sadly he passed away about 16 years ago. ANY information on either the prison camp, those that may have known him, or anything at all would be greatly appreciated. He was such a kind man, and I want to do what I can to understand the hell he went through.

My uncle, who passed away just over 3 years ago, was responsible for the capture of Lloyd Withers and James Verdi on February 25, 1944.  Guenter Schroeder is my uncle's name and he was a Lieutenant of the German Army stationed in Austria at the time.  I know this since Lloyd Withers was so thankful of what my uncle did for him that he gave my uncle his address in the states before my uncle handed him off to go the the prisoner-of-war camp.  My uncle, unfortunately, needed to contact Lloyd Withers after the war so he could be cleared of crimes he was accused, and convicted, of in capturing the airmen.  My uncle kept a copy of the letter Lt. Withers' sent him, to clear my uncle of any crimes, on his wall till the day he died.  The other letter on his wall was a copy of medical orders to fly my uncle out of Stalingrad on the last day planes flew out of that area before the German's we defeated.

Comments:
My father was a prisoner of war in Germany WW II for almost 2 yrs.  He was a Lt.  He would never talk about it.  But our mother told us 4 girls some things like -- he was put in front of a firing squad 3 times and they threatened to shoot him if he did not talk.  They said his name Ragan was German, and tried to get him to switch to their side.  They gave him a whole history of his so called relatives in the past there, and said they had a castle at one time.  Dad did tell me that a boy stuck his head out one night (a no-no) and was shot dead.  And, that they would sometimes get meat to eat by killing the guard dogs.  My dad passed away in 2004. And, being an Officer camp, they were allowed to have courses taught to each other.  He figured he had the equivalent of a college degree.

He had a Lugar German gun, which I had for a while until my sister stole it.  I have something called a bluebook of his.  It is full of just numbers, coordinates I guess.  I didn't get any of his medals as my 3 sisters started taking them before he even died.

I feel he was more shocked and dismayed by the way some of his daughters dealt with him the last year of his life than he probably was being in prison camp.  I can't quite seem to get over some of the things that happened.  The only consolation I have is poems I feel were sent from God that I have written proving to me that there is a God and a Jesus and a Heaven.  But Evil is still out there---even in our families.  They have the advantage because a normal person just would not think a family member could do harm to another, and there is trust where there should not be.  His last words were 'I've been a sucker' and he asked me to hold him.

That was the last I saw of him as my sisters would not let me come in the house to see him.  I tried daily those last weeks to go over there and read from the Bible and Christian books to him which he enjoyed but 2 of my sisters did not, especially when I turned on the TV to religious shows.  So, as their being Guardians, I was not allowed to visit his last 2 days.

Stan flew 15 missions with the Hustedt crew of the 381th 535th Squadron.  His plane was lost on the Oschersleben mission to attack aircraft plants on Feb 20th 1944.

The weather was described as some of the filthiest weather conditions.  They were late for their escort and proceeded over the German coast alone headed for Oschersleben.

About an hour inside Germany they were hit by more than 200 German fighters of high calibre. The group lost six, three from the 535th . The target bombed was Bunde, after more that 40 minutes of constant attack from enemy fighters, mostly FW190's.

Stan spoke often of having been shot down and parachuting into a field where a German farmer placed a pitch fork toward his neck and said "fur Sie, der Krieg ist fertig".

He also spoke of this time in prison camp.  His POW records list him being in Stalag Luft III 3 Sagan-Silesia Bavaria (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stalag_Luft_III.  Moved to Nuremberg-Langwasser) 49-11 http://www.merkki.com/north1.htm

Stan was one of the finest men I have ever known.

My uncle was in the 8th AF 390th Bomb Group stationed in England and was shot down over Frankfurt on his 25th mission. He was in a POW camp for some two years. I was only 8 when he was returned home and could sit for hours listening to his stories. Since we are Austrian he spoke fluent German and didn't learn English until he went to grade school. Because of that he was appointed the "Camp Spy" and would hang around the guards to glean any information he could overhear. Upon being liberated he walked up to his prior guards whom our soldiers had lined up and talked to them in German. He said he would never forget the looks on their faces when he did it. He was a belly gunner and later side gunner in a B-17 when shot down. He was initially reported to my grandmother as "Missing in Action". My other uncle strung up a shortwave antenna and I remember listening to "Axis Sally" for hours and actually did hear his name mentioned as a POW. Needless to say my grandmother was quite relieved. Incidentally, we were always quite concerned about the antenna in the back yard (a simple wire strung from the house to a clothes line pole) because it was reported that people were getting arrested on suspicion of being a spy if an antenna was discovered (especially with us being Austrians). While in prison camp he was promoted and when liberated got all his back pay in one lump sum. I remember seeing my first one hundred dollar bill ever.

Hi there,

Whilst looking through some personal possessions of my late father William Henry Quinn,  I came accross a letter written to him by my mother... and the address given was "M. Stammlager IVC -  Deutschland (Allemagne)"

So as you can imagine it has come as a bit of a shock...

Therefore I'm looking for anyone that has any details on this particular P.O.W. camp, as it appears my father was a P.O.W. there...

We have him enlisted on the 03/10/1938 and demobbed 12/10/1946... He married my mother on the 9th October 1945, which means that he was no longer a P.O.W.

I have just applied for my fathers Service Record, as up untill recently we had no idea that my father was a P.O.W.

All that we were told as children, was that he was a driver for the RASC (Royal Army Service Corps).

Therefore, If anyone can provide me with any details I would greatly appreciate it...

My Dad was in Lamsdorf, now Lambinowice, Jan 1942 before being repatriated in Oct 1943.  He was in a working party E96, we think it was a cardboard factory, Krappitz (now called Krapkowice.
In Feb this year my husband and I went to Lamsdorf.  There are still quite a few ruins of the camp still there, and the commandants residence has now been turned into a museum which is well worth visiting.  Unfortunately heavy snow was predicted and we decided to leave rather than get stranded as we were on a tight schedule, but I would love to go back again with more time.  There is very little in the way of accommodation in Lambinowice, but those who had relatives in the camp can stay at the museum.  Comfortable, but thats all and food needs to be purchased from the supermarket which is quite sparse.  Was rather a weird feeling sleeping there, as no doubt my father looked at this residence/office with dread each time he went past it but never in his wildest dreams would he ever have imaged that not only would he survive this hell hole, but return to NZ, marry his girl and have sons and then a daughter who would come and sleep there so she could walk where he was walking.  Although coming in the winter was good so as to experience a part of what these men endured, but if there is a next time, summer would be good as the ruins wouldn't be so covered.  Allow time for a guided tour, I wish we had.

My father was a Pathfinder pilot with 582 Squadron Little Staughton. He was a Canadian seconded to the RAF and was shot down in the early morning of Aug.13 near the village of Papiermuehle, Dhron Neumagne area, close to Trier. He along with 2 others of the crew of 7 survived and were captured. The other four were buried in the local cemetary. This was his 44th mission.
He was in the east camp at Stalag LuftIII in Hut 66 room 13. Some of his room mates were: Blackie Blackmore, Ab Stickles, Red Gordon, Bill Box Burrooughes, Rocky Trites Jeff Jowett.  Dad survived the Death March across Germany and was repatriated to Canada in June 1945.  I have just finished his memoirs and the book should be released by August of this year under the title Against the Odds.

My father was a B-17 navigator assigned to the 549th Bomb Squadron of the 385th Bomb group.  They flew missions out of Great Ashfield, England in early 1944.    Their crew pilot was Vincent McLaughlin.  Co-pilot was Lawrence Lawler.  The other officer was Bernard Wasserman.
On Thursday, March 16, 1944, the crew's mission was to bomb an aircraft factory in or near Augsburg, Germany.  The plane was disabled with flak, and Dad and Bernie Wasserman parachuted out and landed near Egling an der Par - about 20 km south of Augsburg.  The two became POW's on March 16, 1944.  The rest of the crew were able to manuver their disabled plane just into Switzerland and parachuted out safely.   All the crew survived.
On Tuesday April 11, 1944, Dad left Dulag Luft in Oberursel Germany.  A few days later, Dad and others arrived in Stalag Luft 1 in Barth.  He was assigned to Room 4, Block 2.  Dad remained in camp during his entire 20th year and was liberated by the Russians on May 1, 1945.
Dad still lives today in Minesota and is 85 years.
Michael Fillman - son.

I remember scraps of stories from my grandfather, I wish I knew more. I have come to truly understand the risks and suffering these brave men went through. I wish I could do more for them and we MUST remember them and their stories, the truth of war and its side effects is being lost as we lose these people who fought so we could live in a world without fear. We are letting them down I think...

I was only 14 years old in 1945 so I have no experience with POW camps. I just happened to stumble on this web site and found it so interesting that I have been up every evening for the last 3 nights glued to the computer and reading all those personal stories. I have never found a web site as great as this one. Some or should I say most of the stories could be made for the movies and/or television. Then people will understand what a joke that "Hogans Heroes" was. But one of the stories that I read there was a character that was described and sounded like "Sgt Schultz".
