I was stationed at Cooke 66 - 67 in Co C, 144th Sig. MOS was motion picture photographer out of Ft Monmouth, but in the nearly 3 years spent in Germany never shot an inch of mopic film! But I was a still photographer, lab teck. Shot a lot of "handshake jobs" and official portraits...General Scherrer, Col Racke, etc.
Co C CO was Capt White, First Sgt Grissom his aide (he got busted a grade for throwing some privates stuff from his locker), Joe Warda was co clerk. Fellow photogs were Joseph Wright (Georgia) and Joe Washington (Philadelphia). We spent a bunch of off hours at a gasthaus I remember only as "Mom's".
We had a mobile photo lab mounted on a duece and a half....took it to Graf at least three times. Once during a convoy up to Graf I was driving a 3/4 ton pulling our generator. Got left behind due to engine problems. After being fixed on the road drove a little too fast trying to catch up and flipped the generator trailer under one of those tight "S" bends going under a railroad. That incident didn't get me an Article 15....but a later one did. Got caught by the sergeant of the guard sitting on a sideboard, smoking a pipe and reading a book when I SHOULD have been walking around the motor pool guarding it!
Other good memories....coming in 16th in an all USArmy Germany table tennis tourney.
Also a guy from New York with a cabaret liscense
(entertainer) got me and another guy (can't remember his name...a latin fella) to start an acappelo trio. We practiced for the all Europe entertainment competion but didn't win anything as there were hordes of other groups that not only could sing, but dance and flash some pretty nifty costumes. Our leader's name? Joe Fatone, the father of the recently famous Joey Fatone of N'Sync.
For the last part of my tour was transfered to Furth/montieth barracks and worked for the PIO as photographer/ lab teck/ reporter for the division newspaper Rolling Review. Our radio man there was Vic Bremer. Editor, I believe, was _____ Wallace.
One vivid memory there was the Nixon/Humphrey election. Copy deadline was the night of the election We knew the result would be tight so made up 'winner' front page headlines and pics for each. When the results were known late that night the lieutenant and I raced down the autobahn to the printer with the correct copy. Made it OK and in time but his driving rendered that night unforgettable!
Was nice to run across this website. Read the archives and did not see any EM's that this now older mind recognizes, but if any of you remember a skinny 6' 6" kid with a camera it would be great to hear from you.

I learned to eat schnitzel sandwiches while in germany.I was a medic with the big red one in the early 70's stationed in goeppingen.I would go to the little canteen on the base,I don't remember the name, and drink crisp cold schwaben brau and eat schnitzel on fresh kaiser rolls. The schnitzel would be on a the counter under a glass dome like a doughnut cover.Fabulous! I have since learned to make it here at home, but those sandwiches in that smoky little canteen were the best.

Just a note to let all of you 404th guys know what a great time was had this past weekend in Leitchfield, Kentucky. There were 40 or so attendees along with most of the spouses. The camaraderie was fantastic even though the period of time we served was over a 10 or 12 year span. Seems as there was enough personnel overlap that each contributed to the friendly atmosphere with their fond and funny memories. The weekend was filled with great food, German Beer, (even the ceramic flip tops) and fond memories. If you missed this one, don't miss the next one in upstate New York. We're hoping the attendance grows.

And, by the way, I tip my hat to Dave Wisniewski for starting this web site. Had it not been for him, I wouldn't have known about the reunion and had the opportunity to renew friendships. My contribution to help defer the cost is on the way. Those that care to maintain contacts should all participate. Thanks, Dave

Bill Sukitch

P.S. If any remember 1st Sgt Casorso, he had a heart attack a couple of weeks back and is now fine with angioplasty and stents. I do have his email address should anyone wish to communicate with him.

I think this website is awesome. I have found many dear, and should I say old friends! I kept up with my one roommate, Patty Campbell, all these years but recently found Eve Williamson, SFC Bobby Colburn, Rolf, one of the interpreters at the MP station, Gary Stengler, and some of the MPS that worked at the station. I can not believe it has been over 30 years, although my bones feel like it sometimes! I am a tax accountant married to a pilot. I share my home with a Samoyed and collies! They are my kids! I just wanted to send another message and let David know how much I appreciate this website. Ya'll take care (funny from a girl from California who has been a Texan now since 1982!).

Was at Cookes from late 1958 until mid 1960 with Co A of 4th QM Battalion of 4th AD. Company A was commanded by Captain Robbins. I served under his command as a Platoon Leader (Lt Williams) until he was transferred to Trains. I remember a lot of faces from that era but not a lot of names. I do remember some last names of truck drivers like Buck, Marciano, Guerreo, etc. I also remember there was a Lt. Woods, Lt. Scott, Sgt Thayer, Sgt Pickett, Sgt Day and the W/O in charge of the motor pool whose name I forget
I remember all these with fond memories of Germany. All of you were a great bunch of guys. I also remember a guy named Nickolas Colbert. I remember a Spec Milner who drove for Capt Robbins, but can't remember my own driver's name, tho I do believe he had an Irish name... Spc4 Kelly, I think.
I started teaching high school mathematics when I left the military. I retired from that in 1994. Still clicking along fairly well for 72 years of age. My wife is deceased now and I have one son who is 34 and one grand daughter who is 14. Id would love to hear from any of you guys that remember me from that time and let me know what and how you are doing.

(revised updated Info)

1952 -1960 LOST GRANDFATHER,

Hi everyone....
This post is aimed towards anyone that might have been stationed in Germany "COOK BARRACKS" during the time of 1952-1960 I have very limited information about my possible grandfather and even that information is based on rumors and family hear say and secrets. I've been looking, researching this information for decades now and I am afraid I still hit a dead end every time I find the will to look again. Now I found thing page and I am afraid it will be my last hope in terms of finding any picture, a name, a memory or at least an assurance of any information being somewhat valid.

My grandfather must have been of mixed maybe Hispanic, Native American or Italian descent. Which again is only a guess coming from the way my mother looks. Hear say claims that his name was MR. WALKER (he was called only by Walker, never his fist name which was said to be John, or Johnny (yes like the Whiskey) so I don't know how much of it is actually accurate or just plain made up, which at this point i am leaning more towards)
I do not have rank or division in which he was placed nor for the exact time period.
He must have encountered a local German woman named CAROLA SCHMIEDHAEUSSLER (very attractive and well known) during the given time period. I believe she worked as a waitress on post as well as in the local bars/restaurants like " 7 schwaben & die Hennen", as well as at the PANZER CASERNE)
I do not know if they were officially dating, or just casually well you know what. Anyways, during their time spent together my grandmother got pregnant with my mother which must have been during the time of February/March 1959. Family rumors claim, MR.Walker left Germany before my mother was born in November 1959, and it is not clear if he knew about my mothers existence or not at all.

Regardless of what circumstances back then, I do not wish to bring back long forgotten memories, still it is very close to my heart to finally for fill my mothers silent dream to know - where she comes from. It seems heartbreaking not knowing that other side of you, which has wounded my mother deeply during her childhood in Germany and left many scars even through elderly adulthood. I long have giving up on actually finding him, so today I would be happy about a memory of him, a validation of his existence, a photo or anything else that could bring me closer to my heritage and my mothers dream of finding answers to questions never able to ask. And If you believe remembering my grandmother but in association with another gentleman then please do not hesitate in letting me know.
I am more than thankful for any hint, memory or advice anyone is willing to offer.

Sincerely, Michaela

PS: If anyone is interested to know, Cook Barracks today have been completely remodeled. It is ruled a new development Center for Businesses. My Uncle bought one of the hangar's and turned it into his company. It is beautiful up there now, but I am afraid most buildings have been demolished and replaced. The old big red hangar is ruled a historical Building and is owned by the state and can not be destroyed, even though it is not maintained either and sadly is falling apart :(

However, I am sadden by the lack of people who served with me in the Signal Detachment/Signal Platoon/1st Signal Support. As you see there were several names given to the unit while I was there. I was stationed there from 10/77 to 9/83. I still remember the building number; 134. There are a lot of pictures of this particular building. Where are all the old Signal soldiers from my time frame. This is Bolton, hey give me a holler, lets talk about the good/bad times.

His last name was Galarza, so alot of people kids knew me as James Galarza. Anyway, I went to the elementary and for some reason I want to say I lived in building 301 but I could be mistaken. Recently I did reconnect with an old childhood friend of mine via Myspace. Anyway, I'm going to browse through the site and look at some pictures. I thought I would sign is as I'm curious if I remember any of this stuff.

Am curious to know how many of you Cooke Barracks MP's took your MP training at Oberammergau? I took Combat Engineer training in Ft. Leonard Wood and was ordered to Zweibruecken for assignment. The NCO there said, that my IQ was real good, and he said "how would you like to go to the MP's?" I replied that wasn't my training and wasn't all that crazy about serving with the MP's.
Nevertheless, he cut orders to go to the 28th Division MP's. After about a month (Oct. 1953), I was ordered to take MP training at Oberammergau. BEAUTIFUL area! Wish I could have stayed there.

My father, Maj. Harold Bergdale, served at Cooke Barracks in 1954-55. I attended the junior high that was close to the family quarters. I spent much of my time exploring in the beautiful woods around the base, and frequenting the movie theater, snack bar, etc. The road from the family quarters to the base went into a little valley with steep inclines at both ends. One of my favorite memories is walking with my family from our apartment to the base chapel for Christmas Eve services. It was snowing, but it was very still, not particularly cold, and huge snowflakes floated down on us in slow motion as we walked home. A perfect Christmas Eve. At that time there was no high school, so grades 9-12 were bussed to a boarding school in Heidelburg. One of my biggest regrets is that we returned to the States just before I could go! My dad had previously been stationed in Stuttgart, Robinson Barracks, for several years. We went home on the S.S. America, a luxurious ocean liner, then in its heyday. Sorry to hear that the base is now a ghost town. These were some of the happiest years of my childhood.

Wow, what a great site. I was stationed at Cooke Barracks from 11/86 to 11/88. Was originally assigned to HQ/299th then went to B/4/16 Inf 2nd Plt (War Pigs). Have many great memories of the Yak Shack as well as the NCO club.
Have seen the postings of several members of my Platoon. Nate Perry and Robert Wester, Lloyd Heinrichs and Dan Jutson of the 299th.Went thru Goppigen on a train about 9 years ago, wanted to get off and check out the old "flugplatz" but never did. Would like to hear from some of my friends while at Cooke Barracks. By the way this is a great site.

My father was stationed at Cooke Barracks from around 1960 through 1962. I lived in the apartment building nearest the base (I could see the gate from my back window). Being a kid, I remember the stream behind the building, the swing set, building huge snowmen back there, playing tether ball. I seem to remember two schools, one on the base and one in the community...I think I went to both. I remember the officer's club; going there with my parents. Sadly, I also remember my friend Donny Delosier (sic?) who's father, a helicopter pilot, died when his chopper crashed while helping the townspeople erect a cross at the top of their church. I rode my bicycle that day to the church with my teacher to see what had happened. I remember "sour sticks" at the little German candy store near our housing. It was a wonderful time in my life, a great experience for a kid. I had many friends, John Harper, Bob Evans, Lamonia Freeman, Donny Delosier, and so many more. I had a great experience about 7 years ago. I went back. I found the base...a ghost town. The German guard let me ride through. There was the movie theater where I broke my nose running back to get my jacket. The gym, the school, the airbase, the offices, so many memories came flooding back. The housing area (I found my apartment) was being used as, from what I could determine, an East German refugee camp. I found the church in town with the cross still bent from the helicopter crash. There was a plaque commemorating the loss. It was a wonderful day, remembering a wonderful time in my life.

Goeppingen was my home and I moved to America in 1978.
Gaisrain, the little community next to the post up the hill, was my home, I remember all the good times I had at the Hit and Pic-Pic down town. I went back in 2007 on Vacation to visit my family and it was sad what I saw, but Life goes on. My Mom worked at the PX and the American bank on Post and when I was little I used to go with her and the GI's used to take a lot of Picture of me.
I still get home sick and I miss my German Broetchen and schinkenwurst.
Just wanted to say hello and maybe someone remembers me. I really loved looking at the Pictures.
