I have been receiving the "Share the Spirit!" newsletter for many years and always enjoy all the news and articles.  I graduated from the Convent of the Sacred Heart El Cajon in 1965 and have always remembered with fond memories and pride my years as a "Child of the Sacred Heart".  It has been through the faith and love I learned from the Religious of the Sacred Heart that I have been able to meet the challenges in my life.

Recently (August 2005), my husband Gerry and I adopted our daughter Marianne's two sons and made them permanently ours.  It was a long and stressful struggle (January 2001 to August 2005) but through prayer and support from our friends and family we were able to survive the ordeal and happily start our two little boys on a path of love and stability.

Unfortunately, our daughter, Marianne has not been able to break the hold on her drug addiction and we have not seen her in almost three years.  We pray for her everyday and ask God to deliver her from the demons that possess her and return her safely to her family.

We are, however, blessed with her two little boys to raise and love.  We are also very fortunate to have our two oldest sons and their families living so close to us.  All our efforts to raise our grandsons would not be possible without their support and God's.

May all of my fellow "Children of the Sacred Heart" remember us in their prayers.  My life at El Cajon was so very special and I would not trade the love and education I received for anything.  May God bless all of you in your special works.

Happy Mater feast day to everyone! On October 18th I had the pleasure and privilege to visit Mater at the Trinita dei Monti in Rome. Mater was beautifully as ever.  It was the third visit for me and I hope not the last one.

I put a note in "Please pray for" but would like to add one here. Sr. Margaret (Mavi) Coakley, former headmistress at Noroton, and many other places, was struck by a car in Manhattan yesterday and is in serious condition at St. Vincent's Hospital there. Please pray for her. I bet with her stamina - she's 86 - she will pull through. P.S. She was very careful about how she crossed the street!

I was in Fifth Class in 1966 at Eden Hall. I am trying to remember the name of the teacher. I think she was also the mentor of Debating Club. She coached me to a speech on "The Swallows Return to San Juan Capistrano" that I still remember to this day! But I can't remember her name. Mother ???

We thought you would like to read a recent letter from Sister Irene Cullen at our new Sacred Heart Primary School in Uganda:

“I am here in the Uganda -Kenya province for the past two months. Being with the children and RSCJ is such a blessing. The children’s laughter, singing, playfulness, warm the heart. We are having very serious water problems because it is the dry season and because of an extended drought, which means the water table is diminishing greatly. Then our electrical pumping system that is to transport water from the bottom of our big hill up to the school level tanks couldn’t be used. Imagine. Thieves are stealing the electrical wiring to resell it. So our little ones have to climb down our big hill to our water tanks to draw water and carry it back up the hill in little containers on their heads. Imagine 345 children doing this every day. We have so little water for their hygiene and the cooking needs. Our RSCJ administrators have been so worried but courageous in trying to solve this problem. We need to secure additional rainwater tanks and some kind of solar generator immediately. This unplanned for expense will put us behind in securing construction funds for the needed dormitory building. Right now dorms and classrooms fill the academic building and the school population is expanding. Happily one unit of staff housing is completed and so the teachers have moved out of the classroom block and have a decent room as their own. Also the sisters have moved now to their own residence.

The school spirit is wonderful. I received a lovely letter from the head of the school’s parent group. Jacinta is a doctor, whereas most parents are from very poor villages in the district. This mother wrote: ‘...here at SHPS only one race exists, the race of the children of God. The children are being brought up with a Christ-like love deeply engraved in their hearts....through SHPS we look forward to the formation of a huge family in our midst of many Sophia’s and Philippine’s of the new millennium...a unique generation of great Catholic women who will love and make sacrifice to give service to others beyond self, even in the midst of difficult situations.’”

I attended Sacred Heart Academy in Cincinnati, Ohio (Clifton) from 1957-1963.  I am looking for alumi from the academy in Cincinnati.  I would like to put together a collection of stories about the school from the women who attended.

Even though I attended Sacred Heart from 1-5 grades, it let a lasting impression on me.  I have many stories about the years I went there as well as the positive impact it made on my life.

If you know of anyone who attended Sacred Heart in Cincinnat please forward this message to them or let me know how I may get in touch with them.

Thank you

Barbara Heney Pearson died last month after a very short bout with Stage 4 Lung Cancer!  She was a courageous lady in so many ways.  And her children and grandchildren are examples of people with deep faith.

AMASC General Assembly Comes to Greenwich
Friday, April 21 until Monday, April 24, 2006

Due to Hurricane Katrina, the AMASC Congress Conference of all international alumnae that was to be held in New Orleans had to be cancelled.  Conforming to the Constitution of AMASC there will be a meeting of the "General Assembly," consisting of the current and nominated President's Team, i.e., the President, Vice-President, Secretary-General, Treasurer-General, Religious Councilor, and Archivist; the current and nominated Administrative Councilors; National Presidents (who are the voting members); and our Emeritus Members.

Even thought this meeting is only for the AMASC "General Assembly" we are delighted to be hosting a portion of it on campus, Sunday, April 23, as well as having some of our network alumnae hosting 8-10 attendees for dinner at the "Home Dinner" portion of the conference on Friday, April 21.
If you would like to be a dinner host, please let me know, we would like to have people hosting who are close to the Hilton Rye Town, where all the attendees will be staying.  This is an international group of alumnae and one that could be an incredible bevy of history and knowledge to us all.  It is a once in a life time opportunity, as the conference won't be back in the USA for another 30 years.

As mentioned; most meetings will be at the Hilton, but the entire group will visit Greenwich on Sunday for all day meetings and a panel of young Sacred Heart alumnae from other countries residing in the area. This group will reflect on ways to animate AMASC to a new vision which enables younger alumnae to become more involved in the mission of AMASC and to reflect on the values they learned at Sacred Heart which are operative in their lives today.

As part of the celebration, we would like to extend the offer to you to join AMASC at Mass at Manhattanville's chapel on Sunday, April 23 at 5:30 pm.  We hope to see you there.
